Late summer brings some gorgeous blooms in the gardens. They attract numerous insects and other pollinators; of which the most colorful are the butterflies. This banner illustrates the importance of late summer blooming plants, and the diversity of butterflies. No garden should be without them.

Thanks everyone for your generous thumbs, acorns and comments. Here are a couple more I wish I had been able to put into the banner. The little yellow one is common around here. And the colorful one I thought was a 'Painted Lady', but it apparently is not. Melanie (@mellielong) if you see this please add your opinion.

Betty, thank you, but as a photographer I'm a bit challenged. This one's for you.

Leon, the yellow one is a clouded sulphur & the second one is a common buckeye.

Leon, I agree with Ann. I thought the Sulphur might be an Orange Sulphur because they are very similar but I checked BAMONA and I'm leaning toward Clouded. I don't get either in my area so I'm not as familiar with them. I've only seen either species in WV at Grandma's house. Also, it doesn't seem to tag me if you put parenthesis around it so everyone be aware of that. See how my user name isn't blue like it is when you tag someone?

For those interested, if you click on the whole picture from left to right we have: Silver-Spotted Skipper, Monarch, Tiger Swallowtail (male), Tiger Swallowtail (maybe female), Painted Lady (underside), and Painted Lady (topside).

Leon, now you can compare your Painted Lady to the Common Buckeye and see the difference! You'll get it in no time!

@mellielong Thanks Melanie. I think it's because I put ( ) around your tag that it didn't show. Now (with your help) I can go back and label some of these pictures in my files. It's that time of year up here that butterflies seem to be plentiful. One more ID: Is this a 'Hair-streak'? Plentiful on the mint blossoms here. Many Thanks.

Definitely a Hairstreak, probably a Gray Hairstreak, but I'm not sure if you have similar species in your area. Remember, for absolute identification, I trust the experts at BAMONA. You can set up an account and submit sightings at www.butterfliesandmoths.org It really helps them to track what species are being found where. For those of you who live in more rural areas, I think it's great to contribute since there likely aren't many people in your area that are doing so. Florida has a lot of butterfly enthusiasts so I try to report only uncommon species or those I just can't identify (Skippers!) in order to learn. But I submit everything I see when I visit Grandma in WV since I imagine there aren't a lot of amateur lepidopterists in her area.

I was gone for quite awhile today, but I want you all to know I've learned from and enjoyed the input from everyone. Special thanks to Melanie for her insight and assistance. Each and every one of you are indeed an asset to ATP. It is your pictures, threads, discussions and comments that I enjoy and learn from most. So in that sense you are all very special to me especially, and the web-site as well!

I wish you all a happy, safe & relaxing week-end. And may all your visions be butterflies. Smiling
Again, thanks for the thumbs, acorns and comments!
Thank You!
