Good morning!

It was a busy day at work ...

Short answer: no idea.

My first guess was "a small wrecking ball", but it's too small, too light, and isn't all banged up. Besides, there no Miley Cyrus with it.

Then, like Ken, "maybe some kind of exercise thingy" ... for people with very small hands. The "kettlebell" would have been right on, but at most we could stick our fingers into those holes.

I also liked the idea that "a rope could thread through those holes". But it wouldn't float, so it isn't to hold a net up. Maybe weights for the bottom of a net, to hold it down?

Sorry!

Has anyone put the photo onto the reddit site yet? I looked at the site and it is beyond my comprehension. Couldn't find out where the 'whatisthis' part is.

I looked again at reddit. To upload a photo on that site you need to use a photo-hosting place such as DropBox or whatever else. Too much trouble for me but I will stick around and check out the interesting stuff on reddit.

I posted this to my Dad's Facebook page (he has more and older friends than me). My aunt said this, "I keep thinking this looks like a toy ball for horses that is to be tied to the walls of a stall. The one I have seen doesn't have an open center but maybe they are made differently. The open center could be used for treats to encourage exercise. I have seen small versions for dogs."

Didn't someone else say something about seeing a similar object in a monkey enclosure?

Still stumps me. I have been Google Imaging like crazy! The thing is that it has not one but two handles that don't even look large enough for an adult hand, nor are they far apart enough to? And then there's the void in the middle? This is a crazy one!

I still cannot believe it: I saw this object on TV last night!!!!!

It is ...... a buoy for fishermen's nets.

I hope you don't mind, but the picture I found is of a yellow one (the one on TV was black)

Not that not having identified the object would not let me sleep, but somewhere, deep back in my head, it was nagging me Sticking tongue out

Not silly at all! I was just thinking about it today myself and I had occasion to use Google image search recently and was thinking I need to do that with that object. I just hadn't had a chance to yet.
Here, I found bunches of them.
Oh heck, I can't copy the url for the whole page from the search on Safari -- you can do that in Chrome. Oh well, just Google "trawl floats with ears"

I don't think that is it.
1. Notice the floats are all brightly colored to make them visible in water. The back one would be almost invisible.
2. The float in the ad is solid. No opening at the top.
3. Jolana said it was plastic/rubber covered metal. If floats were metal they would not float.
