So I have four different kinds of hens and chickies throughout my garden beds and thought to myself...hmm I love these little things that I don't seem to be able to kill unlike 90% of everything else I plant...I wonder if there are other varieties? Well after a bit of googling and stumbling across this site, holy frijoles! I'm so excited to collect more now! This brings me to a question that I hope someone can help me out with. I have my virtual cart full of different semps from the Young's website but they're sold as bare roots. Are they something that has to be planted at the beginning of summer, or would they be ok to plant now? I'm assuming I could plant them now since they seem to be such hardy and quick growing little buggers, but I'd sure hate to waste money on something that's going to croak. I don't have much of a green thumb, if you haven't guessed by now. Thanks in advance for any help!

I get most of mine as bare root plants and they do just fine. This time of the year depending on where you live and what the weather is like, you may have to watch over them until they get established. Once they do that they will be just as easy as the ones you already have. Spring it the ideal time for most of us to acquire new plants. The weather is moderate and the semps start actively growing. Once temps heat up in the summer they tend to slow down until the cooler weather of fall.

I live in Utah, zone 5. Still have lots of warm weather left and we start getting snow around November.
I ended up getting some off Ebay so I'll try my luck. Do you know if they'll grow indoors in a sunny window sill?
No I haven't been to the database, but I'll go check it out right now.

Hi Christie, welcome to the semp forum! Indoors is not ideal conditions for semps, but if you have sunny windows it would be OK to hold them there for a bit until you can get them outside. Outside in a shady location would be better until they can get established. You're going to fall in love with these awesome plants! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of yours!

You're probably in a similar climate to mine. This time of year I plant them in pots and keep them out of the mid-day sun until they are good and rooted and the weather isn't so intense. They shoudl over winter outdoors just fine.
