Some Canna are still blooming, Phasion/Tropicanna and City of Portland.

I re-potted the Calla Z. aethiopica 'White Giant' for winter storage. Here's a pic from early October.

I have been holding out on bringing in my plants. No sign of frost yet so I am waiting. The Tropical WL are still looking great and putting out some nice blooms.

I pulled the aethiopica White Giant out of the pond as it was looking pretty rough and I had stopped watering all the caladiums and moved them into the garage in preparation of digging them up. Haven't pulled the Portadoras yet. I am hoping to use some of the smaller leaves to make cement leaf molds. I just can't get over how huge they have gotten for me this year.

Holly those Water Lilies are just beautiful. Such intense colors. How do you keep them going over winter?

The Portadoras have gotten to a nice size. Really like those wavy leaves. How long to the leaves get for you? Are you z6b?

Evan this is my first year for the TWL I have heard that you can store them in plastic bags with a little damp sand. I will try that method and see how they do for me. This is my 3rd year for the Portadoras and they get bigger every year. From the tip to the bottom of the lopes most of them measure around 3ft a little less or more. The biggest is 43inches. Yes I am in zone 6 not sure A or B the maps always show the line as running pretty close to our area.

Good luck with the TWL this winter Holly. They're so amazing. I finished digging the Callas last night and there drying in the basement. Do you grow the regular aethiopica? Mine didn't flower this year but grew larger than last. Everything else is still doing OK. The Castor bean and Xanthosoma were a real pleasant surprise.

Frost alert tonight. Moved the EE's in containers to the screened porch. We are expecting four days in the 70's after tonight so I know I need to take care of everything by Tuesday and get it downstairs. Once the frost hits and I get die back will need to act fast to dig out ee bulbs and canna.

Ain't Fall grand? The Cannas are doing so well, 2 still flowering, that I'll wait to the last minute for those. Susan, have you ever left any of your EE to overwinter outside? I had a garage sale this summer, first time, what a load of work that was. Two people told me they left their EE overwinter and they come back. I'm going to try that with one of the C.esculenta. They're so prolific I won't really miss one if it dies.

Evan I've been too lazy to dig up my Mamouth EE's, Canna 'Pretoria' and 'Tropicanna' in the past and had no survivors. They will be dug up and overwintered for sure now. I overwinter in the basement and it's not a walk out so I've decided only easy to carry to the basement plants are going to get another chance. I tried to overwinter and forcing bulbs in the garage one year but my DH informed me he helped me out by throwing away all those pots of dirt that were in the garage. Grumbling Yikes!!! Learned I can't survive summer without Tropicanna. Sometimes the tall red run of the mill cannas have come back when planted close to the house but I have more shade now from surrounding plants. Over the next 15 days I need to prepare a new bed and cut out a lot of landscape fabric.
Inca Sun still going strong.

DH appears to be very helpful. Big Grin
This year was my first with Tropicanna (one) and I've fallen for it as well. That foliage is just so amazing! It just finished it's 2nd bloom stalk and it's got 3 more getting ready, but I doubt they'll make it. I'm really glad you had such nice pics of it in the containers forum because that's what convinced me to try it. Thanks. What is Inca Sun? Is that the Brug or the other plant. Both beautiful and good luck with the new bed.

Yes Inca Su n is a Brugs. Once the frost hits I will dig up my tropicanna, cut the dead foliage off, and over winter on a rack in the basement.

The larger Colocasia esculenta (the species from the largest corms) sometimes brake off the mother corm which has sometimes rotted away. The smaller mother corms typically remain. All have lots of cormels which I've read are what is eaten as Taro.

This one is 6'+.

This is one of the Xanthosoma I bought as yautia at the supermarket. I like the super glossy dark green leaves and red petioles. No Pups but the corm should overwinter fine.

Evan when my EE is a bulb, I dig it dry it and sit it on a rack in the basement. When its a corm, I leave it in the pot and carry all to basement and water once a week. Can I dig it, cut the foliage, clean it off, and let them dry on a rack in the basement?

Holly, I've separated them in the past. Mostly they survive, even the smaller ones. I'm referring to C. esculenta which I don't exactly consider precious. Here's the earlier one broken up. Thumb of 2011-10-24/eclayne/d1143b

The Xanths I don't know, first year. Since I've got way too many of all of them I may just leave most of the offsets attached.

Susan, Unfortunately I don't have a recommendation. What's the difference between an EE bulb and tuber? I've been treating all the Aroids with a large bulb/tuber/corm (btc) similarly. Overwinter in boxes next to the Callas. That's why I decided to pot up, and overwinter in the basement, the one's I received as small starts this year. Folks have said they can take a few years to develop large btc.

Here's some pics of the other Spanish market yautia. My guess is this is Xanthosoma robustum.

We pull everything out of the yard today. Only the canna are left and they will come out later. They are calling for some pretty cold weather and snow, too. Real early for our area. The PortAdoras were jut huge.

Zantedescia aethiopica 'White Giant'. It bloomed after I re-potted and brought indoors for Winter. What a great treat.
The bloom is almost 7" long with a very triangular shape.
