It might be interesting to check whether those cultivars that can develop reddish colour on the bases of their fans in the early spring can also develop reddish-purplish colour on their pods.

In the Winter 2008 Daylily Journal Marianne Joordens had pictures of many different pods including Hemerocallis citrina (which has reddish fan bases). The pod (and according to the article the flower bud) has dark purple coloration. Page 53 photo 19.

There are a couple of speckled pods pictured as well, but nothing as red as DogsNDaylilies' picture. It's too bad there's only one pod, it would be interesting to see if it is common to all the pods on that plant or just a one-off.

With luck, there will be more! Thumbs up I pollinated two blossoms yesterday and there are a few blossoms left (The Royal Frosting is showing bud-building characteristics, which is interesting to me since it's not listed as a bud builder.)

I've had the reddish-purple speckles on pods before (note the pictures in the first couple of posts in this thread), but this is just REALLY red...the other pods started out pretty green and then added in the red color as they got bigger, from what I recall. This doesn't have the pointalism-esque pattern, either, just a smooth reddish color. So strange. I am surprised, though, that no one has piped up and said they have seen this type of thing before. I would've thought someone would say "hey, that's what happens when you have such-and-so disease" or "yeah, some fertilizers used in nurseries cause extra pigmentation in the plant sometimes"....or something else that tells me what craziness is going on with this little bud, hehe Rolling my eyes.

Unfortunately the deer have eaten most of the pods on my daylilies. I have one daylily that develops quite dark pods but it had its flower buds eaten this year.

The picture below is about the darkest pod that I have now.

Thumb of 2015-08-26/admmad/e38be2

This is a pod from several years ago; Unfortunately the photo is completely out of focus but the filename indicates it was a very dark bluish-purple

This is another dark pod from several years ago.

Oh, wow, Maurice, those ARE really dark! Mine sort of looks like the last picture--do you know what cultivar that picture was of?

I'm sorry, the photos have no information associated with them other than in their filenames (which are basically "dark pods"). They are probably from my seedling field so would not be registered cultivars.

Is there a recent thread devoted to only seedlings? I'd love to see a mass of pictures of what people are growing.

In fact, it would be neat to have a 'favorite seedling' poll where everyone secretly puts in a vote for their favorite seedling(s) and then we see who the winners are.

@Char - Wow! Thank you for the very dedicated response! I'd forgotten about the August Seedlings thread (I keep thinking about the August Blooms thread), which was what I was wondering about. Lapse in memory on my part. Sticking tongue out Thank you, though, for the very thorough response! Green Grin!

You're welcome. Thought you might enjoy seeing the seedling threads from last year, too. The seedling threads are always popular to view...during bloom season and during the winter when nothing is blooming.

Mike Huben's Army of Darkness has dark scapes and buds, not sure if the pods are dark as well. You might find reading his page interesting so I'm including a link for you...

Sue (and others), I noticed another pod that had taken on this. It must have been hiding on my previous pod-check! Anyway, though, it's a perfectly normal color of seedpod...no trace of red, really:

I was breezing through as many pictures as I could before I got too tired last night and I was in seedling photo heaven, LoL! I must have been dreaming about daylilies because I woke up extremely excited to do daylily stuff. Oh wait...that describes me the last two months! Whistling Rolling my eyes. Hilarious! It was nice to have the seedling links all in one spot for easy access--thanks again!

Wow, talk about timing! JUST yesterday I was talking to my husband about the possibility of creating a flower in honor of his unit (or some division) in the army because I came across a daylily on Oakes' website called "Brigade." Since my husband isn't in a brigade anymore and it wasn't a relevant enough name, he told me not to bother. NOW...you've gone and shown me one that has "Army" in the name AND has dark scapes (which I only realized existed in the daylily world about 5 days ago when I was perusing Gossard's website and saw the description for Yellow Hornet and got really excited about it!...and then again just a couple of days ago on a description of something in the Lily Auction). Very crazy timing, Char, very crazy timing! Big Grin

I'll read the article very soon here because I'm really interested in that!

I have a pod on Gram's Dream that cracked open enough to get a good look at large white seeds that were inside. It happened a day after we had a wonderful and very needed rain. I figured it popped open a bit because it finally got some badly needed moisture. I waited and watched as the seeds DID turn dark. I also have several others where the pods are dark (almost sunburned looking). Being my first year of seed collecting, that is what I chalked it up to???? I do have Royal Frosting, don't remember if I have a pod on it. I will check when I get back home...I've been house, dog, and cat sitting for my sister almost two weeks now. I can't wait to get home to my pods!!! And my dear hubby too Whistling Bless his heart. I have him checking the pods while I'm gone. I'm so happy to see others pictures of the pods and seeds and hearing the experiences. It really helps us newbies. Thank You!

Sabrina - good luck with that! I hope it gives you lots of seeds to create some beautiful seedlings!

I just opened a pod yesterday from my first ever pollination and it had 14 seeds in it!!! Four of them were very small/shriveled, so I tossed them (although I probably should've just given them a chance just in case...)...but that still left me with 10 from a single pod! No wonder it took so long for the pod to brown/ripen! I couldn't even enter it into my PlantStep software because the software caps the seed count at a single digit, so I had to tell my system I only got 9 seeds from the pod, even though there were 10. Sticking tongue out

I sometimes miss pods that have been open for a few days and the seeds appear to have already had enough drying time outdoors (pretty shriveled up), so, I only give them one more day in the house and then put them in the fridge.
