In an old thread post, Michele ( @tink3472 ) posted about this cultivar:
http://garden.org/thread/view_...

I wonder if Fred ( @spunky1 ) has it and might be willing to post some information about how it performs in his garden?

Sorry for the delay!! I've been without internet for several days.

Sunglasses Needed is such a great daylily - the color and form make it an amazing standout in the garden. It performs pretty well in my zone5 garden (though truthfully with the snow I doubt the plants frequently see those temps as they're well insulated) and will rebloom up here. The scape height and bud count are lower in the north but that's nearly universal so I don't count it against the plant. Thumbs up

I don't have any experience with this gorgeous daylily, but I feel I must refer you-all to Bill Waldrop's blog of June 2 where he posts two pictures of his tetraploid conversion of SUNGLASSES NEEDED. You can click on the pictures to get the enlarged photos of his TET SUNGLASSES NEEDED -- what a fantastic looking bloom!

James - Thanks for your comments! Is yours still blooming? If so, would you be able to get some stats on it ... scape height, bud count on a scape, and how many branches on the scape. Also, how many fans do you currently have with your plant?

Betty - Thank you for that blogspot link. Thank You! Wow! 10" double bloom! That, to me, is amazing! Makes me even more interested in this cultivar! Thumbs up

Sunglasses Needed on rebloom in our garden this summer. This bloom was the middle of July in our Zone 7 garden in NW GA. It is a massive bloom. I apologize for the hand but sometimes the blooms are facing away from me, and I don't want to climb over in the bed to get to the other side and break off buds and other blooms.

Doris - I love those 2 photos! Your hand in the photo actually gives a good perspective to the bloom size! THAT has got to be one of the largest double daylily blooms I've ever seen in a photo! Does it produce a lot of blooms on each scape?

I hate to report this, it never did really good here and finally passed last winter. I want to get this daylily again, put it in a different area, if its really an evergreen it should do great here, its a great show flower and I have seen it growing very well for others.

I moved it last fall into this new area. The first scape was short. It was blooming for the National the day that Jan Joiner was in the garden. I apologized to her and explained that I had moved it. The rebloom scape was probably about 28 inches. I will pay closer attention next year to the bud count. It is now in an area where I will see it each day.

Fred - Sorry to hear it did not survive for you at that time. Please update this thread if you get another one that grows and blooms successfully. Thumbs up

Doris - You moved it to a new area? Please tell us about the area you had it in and why you moved it. And also let us know the garden conditions you moved it to. This information might be very helpful for anyone obtaining Sunglasses Needed to help ensure success with this beautiful cultivar. Smiling

Fred - Why do you think it didn't survive in your garden? I'd really like to know as that is a cultivar that I really like.

I got this from Jan last fall. She did a talk at our club and mentioned it. I asked her to compare it to Firefly Frenzy, which I love. She said Sunglasses needed was like FF on steroids.

Over the winter the fans dwindled into tiny, grasslike things. I was really worried about it. Although it didn't bloom this year I'm happy to report that it's grown tremendously and I think it will sail through next winter and put on a show next spring.

I have no idea why it did not survive, it was in the display area with all the other doubles and received all that TLC along with the others.

@Fred - How long did it last from the time you got it until it died? Did it not make it through the Winter or the Summer?
