Hi all---A really great place to hang out in with fellow gardeners. I found you by accident when searching for something else.

I'd like to share a tip on controlling fungus plants which some of you may already know about. Being an outdoor and indoor gardener, my indoor plants were beseiged with those nasty, plant-destroying fungus gnats. Since I use mosquito bits and dunks outdoors, I tried them in the topsoil of my indoor houseplants thinking the active material would kill off the gnat larvae as it does the mosquito. Glad to say that it worked very well and haven't seen any evidence of fungus gnat activity plus my houseplants aren't keeling over. If you're going to try this, keep in mind that the mosquito bits are effective only on the gnat larvae and not the flying adults. But if you can get rid of the larvae, then you've won most of the battle. Outdoors the fungus gnats aren't much of a problem since climate and natural predators control them. I buy the mosquito bits online but maybe your own hardware stores carry it and the bits are cited as being harmless to plantlife.

Thanks for having me.

Hi, I am glad I found another Forum I like, I only have Addendum's (desert rose) and Plumerias right now, and have to say I have too many of them but I would love to find house plants with unusual blooms for winter, or unusual foliage.

Hello all.
I thought that I would stop in to see what is going on in the houseplant thread. It is so nice to see some familiar names here.
I live in a back apartment and do not have that many houseplants at home due to having no sunlight at all plus a large kitty that chewed all of my Hoyas and Orchid cactus to nubs one weekend when I was away. And yes, she was sick. I do keep a begonia, orchid plant and a small screwpine at work where they do well with the lighting.
Love the photos and plants shown so far at this thread. Will try to add a photo of a plant soon.

Waving HI to everyone! My name is Chris and I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor of my building, so I can't do any outside gardening Thumbs down
So I've been doing my thing with houseplants and right now, I have around 50 or so. My balcony looks like a jungle too Rolling on the floor laughing

I do tend to lean towards benign neglect and then when I realize what I've done- I drown my plants! Whistling
I loved what Alan said about "I love my plants as long as I can keep them alive" Smiling I'm right there beside you on that one, Alan!

Isn't is funny how there always seems to be certain plants that everyone else can grow like crazy, but when you try it- it dies? My nemesis is English Ivy.. I love that plant dearly, but I'm Death to it! As soon as I bring it home, I start counting the days until I have to throw it away. But I keep on trying! One of these days, I'll get that little sucker to grow for me! Thumbs up

I love Nephthytis- I have around 6 different varieties right now and I'm always looking for more.
One of my favorite plants is Orange Prince, which is a philodendron.. This is the prince a year ago

Anyway, I look forward to browsing in this forum and seeing what I can learn from everyone!

Hello to all! I have just found your forum and would gladly join in! I grow mostly drought tolerant plants, though I do have some hardy tropicals, and some orchids, most of the orchids I have to grow indoors. So nice to see fellow enthusiasts!

When I was in Manila for the past 2.5 months, I saw this lovely plant growing outdoors in a part sun area. I tried to ask what it is called, and they cannot name it, I guess, just took it for granted that it is alive and thriving. So all I can do is take a photo and hope to find out its name later on.

Hope someone recongizes it! Though am pretty sure I cannot grow this one, it seems to like lots and lots of humidity, which I cannot provide because of our very dry weather. Some thinks it is Birds of Paradise, but I do not think it is...hope someone can ID it Smiling

Hi everyone! Welcome to the forum! I've been growing houseplants for 40+ years and have good luck and bad luck with them. Some that are supposed to be the easiest to grow just don't do well for me at all ... like ivy, I can't seem to keep one alive!!

Chris: Love your Philodendron 'Prince of Orange', beautiful shot! I had a very large one for a few years but last winter the freezes here in Florida killed it along with a few other very large Philo's and a number of other plants ... but I've been talking about downsizing anyway. Big Grin

tarev: That is a beautiful plant in your photo, I wonder if it could be the Impatiens niamniamensis, commonly called "Congo Cockatoo" and "Parrot Plant"?

Lin, how big did your Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' get. You mentioned that it was large, and I'm curious as to how big they get. How do they grow, all from a crown, and bushy. They don't look like a vine from what pictures I've been able to find of the plant.

Hi Alan,

Yes, the 'Prince of Orange' is one of the self heading type of Philodendron's, not the vine type. I went looking through my photo's and I was mistaken, my 'Prince of Orange' wasn't one of my large ones, it was about 3' tall before the cold killed it last winter. I'm not sure how large they get but it seems to me someone posted a photo of theirs on cubits or DG that was pretty large. This is a photo of my 'Prince of Orange' taken in 2009:

This was another one of the self heading type of Philo's that I lost to the freeze last winter, Philodendron 'Rojo Congo':

I had another one Philo 'Congo Green' (just like 'Rojo Congo' but with green stems) that was even bigger than Rojo Congo but I don't have pic's of that one. I sure miss my big Philo's!

Hey thanks to all helping me ID the plant. I think it does resemble the Heliconia as suggested by Jeri. It kind of resembles the Parrot plant but the leaves are different. Thanks for all your help!

Lin, I saw that orange and just about flipped, I'm too old to be doing flips. Rolling on the floor laughing I have a silver spotted philo, Velvet leaf Philo. I will get some fresh pictures. I took a cutting of that pink one earlier, It scared me, it dripped red juices. Would love a piece of the orange if it is old enough. Rescued a peacelily today at Lowes for a $1.00 poor thing had it's little leaves drooping. Told DH I bet I could save it, so for a dollar I got it.It is looking better already.
