Although I only added one daylily this year, I still would like to obtain Scandanavia. Maybe next year.

We have 1/3 acre and I have about 750 daylilies, but probably more than half of them are in pots on tables because I want to use them for hybridizing and I need to move them to shade or even indoors when I make crosses and our weather starts warming up. I have so many in the ground that I end up not being able to use as pod parents because of our temps, and when it's really hot I have a hard time even getting pollen.

Self control is not a strong suit...

I will be adding substantially less this year due to space constraints.

In England luckily/unluckily we do not have the number of cultivars available to you guys in US and Canada. I have the same addiction as most of you without the supply or room to indulge! However I did find a supplier in Belgium who had a good selection of plants so I had to indulge. In addition I have a friend who grows to sell with whom I do plants swaps (she likes my alstroemeria, crocosmia and brunnera) and she sent me some from my wish list. I found another supplier in Cornwall, not far from me, and she sent me some very generous bonus plants. SO ... this is what I have received this year:

Annabrooke Heatherly
Blackberries and Cream
Crimson Edgings
Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Don't Touch That
English Skies
Exotic Treasure
Freaky Good
Green Mystique
Jennie Sivyer
Magic of Oz
Nicole's Melts My Heart

Rose F Kennedy

Yeah, James -- Isn't that what I said last year? Rolling on the floor laughing

That's a nice selection of quality plants, Hilary!

Only added a few, as one has to leave here for every new plant added. After visiting Judy Davisson's garden last year, I had little resistance to hers. Added a couple from Scott Elliott and a couple more here and there.... you've heard this story before. I usually don't order any for fall delivery.

Hilary, thats why i have a revolving door policy when it comes to space. I had to get rid of some less desirable cultivars to make room for better and newer ones. Although some old ones i will never part with because they are so dependable and beautifully simple. Like classic red Chicago Apache or Baja.
Sounds like its getting easier to find daylily suppliers no matter where you live which is wonderful.

Cindy - I LOVE that Scandinavia! What a tall beauty! Definitely a good one to own!

Betty - 1/3 acre. Hmmm ... my property is 1/4 acre, but I have a home on my property too. Is your home also located on your property? I ask because I am trying to figure out how to squeeze more daylily beds around my yard. How many in-ground daylily beds do you have and what is the size of them? (I hope you don't mind my being nosy....?)

I think I was very lucky this year because for some reason, the majority of my daylilies bloomed in May before the real heat of summer hit. Which may be why I had such good luck with seed production this year. I can understand your frustration with the bloom season and the heat index when trying to hybridize. Sad

Unfortunately for me, that is not true .... yet. Maybe I can create some rust resistant cultivars that will get the attention of other local gardeners and see daylily interest return here.... I would love to be able to join a local club and see them for sale at the local nurseries. Maybe in my lifetime .... would sure be nice! Smiling

Hello Cindy. On the matter of space i have a residential 60ft. x 120ft. corner lot. Front of my house faces east where i have 6 cultivars planted. In back i have a big L shaped bed where a good half of maybe 140 plants are. Against the back of the house getting morning sun are 15 more cultivars.
I also have 2 smaller beds one by a gate and another backed up against privacy fence. One holds 2 plants plus other perennials. The other holds about 15 more.
On the south side facing the street i easily have 20 more cultivars. On the SE corner i have anew bed with only 3 different cultivar but they are lined out for mass planting because i have several of each in there.
Finally i cannot plant on the north side of the house because of a hill that slopes down to the house next door. The cul de sac slopes down and we have the high ground and we get more than our share of the wind too.
Next spring the big L in back will get bigger i just have to work out the details. The house next door is for sale but 2 mortgages would break our budget.

I have a corner house too Kevin and my whole backyard is daylilies, no grass whatsoever. It's getting to be too much work so I would like to keep just my favorites on one side of my yard and put the other side of my yard back to grass again. I also have daylilies on both sides of my house and behind my garage, which faces an alley.

Becky, yes our home is on our property, and our 1/3 acre actually goes up a hill and our front yard looks like a ski slope! And unfortunately our drought situation has made me shut off water to my three good-sized beds that go in tiers down our front slope -- and that's where I was going to plant most of my seedlings! We have large lawn areas on the slope in front and in the lower back yard, and half of our upper back yard is an oriental garden -- which is now getting stuffed full of daylilies! So I hardly have any beds for daylilies, but the tables under and around the patio pergola and at the top of the steps to the upper back yard really house most of my daylilies now. Sorry I can't be more helpful with beds for daylilies.

FYI: I also got SIMPLY KAREN at National, and it bloomed this summer. Turns out it was actually SUMMER PEARLS, so maybe keep an eye on that one... I know hundreds of plants were dug for National, so the occasional mix-up is bound to happen. Hopefully the one you have is labeled correctly.

That is a great list of plants, btw. Thumbs up

@Lilydaydreamer
I got the same "Buddy's K."
The last part of the tag was hard to read when I got it,
I called it Buddy's Kristen.
I also got some more that aren't in the DB from them.
I would imagine that they are future intros...

The one they sent to me is Buddy's Kirsten (Hall-J., 2011)
height 28in (71cm), bloom 6.5in (16.5cm), season EM, Rebloom, Evergreen, Tetraploid, 22 buds, 4 branches, Cream white with light green edge, green throat. (Buddy's Blondy × Wonder of It All) I am not sure where I found the information but it was likely on the AHS database. I did plant it to see if it will over winter here in the north after all it was a gift plant so nothing was invested.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!
