I have better luck with the avocados in the compost pile. They are even buried to deep and still grow. Had 4 last year, moved them out of the soil, forgot them, so I guess I will try again.

We broke a record today that has held since 1939. This week is going to be brutal. Hope we are smart enough to stay inside.
If it is not going to affect you five years from now, do not let it get you down.

Well, I know we're having challenges with growing plants in this unbearable heat. Here is a little movie clip showing things we may have more success with growing...

Gotta get some of them donut seeds! Wonder if you put chocolate syrup, instead of honey on the ground, if you'd get chocolate glazed donuts?

Thought gardening was hot until I got caught walking around downtown Phx on Sunday. I'd won some tickets to see Hairspray at the Herberger (which was fantastic btw) but had never been to the Herberger before. The address on the letter with the tickets I had was on the corner of 1st street and Fillmore. The person I was with said we should park in the 5th st and Washington garage because she knew how to get back there. So we walked from there to 1st st and Fillmore. Huh, that's the address for the Valley Youth Theater (the group putting on the show), not the Herbergber. We were lost and it was 1:30 pm without a cloud in the sky. The streets were deserted as smart people were inside. Luckily we saw a police car, waved it down, got directions and trudged over to the theater on Monroe between 3rd and 4th streets. Three blocks from where we parked. ARGH. And I was wearing heels. Air conditioning never felt so good once we reached the theater!

Unusual couple of days for earthquakes. 5.9 per USGS in Virginia. 5.3 yesterday in south central Colorado.

Desert Denial (Marie): The Christmas cactus that Alan I have been talking about is the original variety Schlumbergera x buckleyi. It does much better in AZ than all the new hybrids. I keep it in the house in summer and as soon as the nights start to cool in Sept. I put it out on my patio. It does just fine here with that treatment and blooms too. I have never been able to keep the hybrids varieties more than a year or two. Here is a picture of the variety I am talking about (notice the leaves are curved not pointy like the hybrids):

I had one bloom last year! I put mine out on Sept. 9th last year. I don't know this year with the record heat we have had at night. I may have to wait until later too. I don't want to lose them. That is also why I separated them in different pots. I will probably set one out earlier and one later and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

So pretty. I've never had much luck with those year to year. Might try again!

Yes, Alan, that is one of the ones you gave me and it is the normal color of Schlumbergera x buckleyi. I had a huge one for many years when I lived in Rhode Island and that was the color of the hundreds of flowers it had! The white-flowered ones are hybrids.
