Background history:

"Baja California" is a evergreen tetraploid introduced in 2011 by Dan Trimmer. Jane and Dan own Water Mill Gardens in Enterprise, Florida. For more information about their Daylily Gardens:

A very interesting video about the Trimmer's hybridizing:

This cultivar can be found in the ATP Plant Database:
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Baja California')

According to the ATP database, this 36" tall cultivar has 7" blooms. It is an early to mid-season bloomer and rebloomer. It boasts a 46+ bud count.

Please join in, if you own this plant! We would love to know more! (I award an acorn for performance information posted on this thread.)

Also, please consider adding a "Local Report" to the ATP Plant Database!!! Thank you!

This daylily did very well on the Gulf Coast (zone 9), its pod and pollen fertile, as I remember it had no problems opening and rebloomed for me.

I would love for someone to comment on the bud count. The Plant Database (from AHS) says it produces 46+. Is that true or even close?

I love the way Baja California looks but I have Spanish Fiesta instead, which looks a lot like it.

I have 'Baja California'. It has bloomed for 6 weeks straight, and still blooming. It is a wonderful plant, with a spectacular, very colorful bloom. My plant had 43 buds on 4 scapes. Fertile both ways. Here is what it looked like this morning after a night of rain showers.

Alex, you have convinced me...I must have Baja California for the bud count alone. I won a bid on the Lily Auction and it will be here in the spring.

@Pat236
Just double checking, both of your posts mention just plain 'Baja' and not 'Baja California', just want to point out to anyone reading these posts that those are different plants. I do not have 'Baja California' myself, but I do have 'Baja'. I know you were probably just using a shortened version of the name, but just want to make sure.

Thanks Larry...I was indeed referring to Baja California. I didn't realize there was a Baja as well. I can't wait until the spring!
