in australia, these are called 'the old christmas lily'- it becomes confusing from there, because then,'regale was called 'the christmas lily'-it gets worse, because,as a child,i was raised to know, the'longiflorum' as a christmas lily=-=-i do know, not many people grow them here.,.and only for the fact that i had a great, gardenwise, greenfingered 'mentor'i take mine very much for granted,.,i have about 10 ,forgotten ,seed raised seedlings in a pot i discovered on sunday,..i dont think many people here appreciate what they are,or their rarity,.,.or how tempremental they are!-who knows,'tastes may change'.

You all need to branch out more. Ornamental and native grasses are in fine dried display here in the north, Allium thunbergii(Ornamental Onion) is at its peak, and the witchhazel will still be blooming to Thanksgiving.

Alright, I have a whole yard full of ornamental grasses. Didn't even think about them, sorry. That was my first venture in the nursery business, and I have huge clumps in the gardens. I could never handle them now as a nursery product.

Very pretty garden views, Polly. Thanks for sharing!

I snapped this yesterday, my Dawn viburnum. It is just starting to bloom and will go all winter blooming, usually into March or April. Lightly fragrant.

Thanks Jo. You do need a really large are to work some of those miscanthus in. And they are my favorites. I would guess some of mine are 8' wide. But I love them.

Pardalinum, is that the same as Pink Dawn Viburnum? I have that one, and it blooms in early spring here in Kansas. Mine really suffered in the 110+ temps here this summer. I lost one plant entirely.
Not even sure whether to replace it or not. The blooms and the scent were terrific, but oh that foliage was ugly from the heat and wind. What's the secret with them?

Yes, it is Pink Dawn viburnum. For some reason the "Pink" part has been dropped in the name.

The secret is to grow it in the Pacific Northwest where it gets neither exceedingly cold nor exceedingly hot (like your 110 deg.). Big Grin It does look somewhat unsightly in the summer but not what I would call ratty. We don't get strong winds in the summer so that helps.

If we get a hard freeze (these usually don't last long) the blooms are damaged but seem to kick back in with new ones.

And if nothing else it provides a place for the birds to park or hide from the occasional hawk that might visit.
