Hemophobic said:Duane: I'm impressed by your seed saving.

I have a few of the following:

hibiscus moscheutos `Fireball'
salvia black and blue
salvia greggii

I do the bagging and shaking trick on the salvias, too. Just snip off a stem with lots of seed heads and bag it.

Anybody doing a seed swap here? I'd love to have some of those seeds of Duane's.

I didn't see "OP", F1" or "comes true from seed" in our database or by Googling. Sorry!

Wikipedia says:
"Numerous cultivars have been selected, including ... 'Black and Blue' (very dark violet blue calyx), ..."

Calling it a cultivar hints that it might be stabilized, but I wouldn't bet a farm on that.

I'm going to guess that it's one of those "fancy" Salvias that look best when cloned.

Paraphrasing, one of Dave's other garden websites said this:

"By seeds" was not listed under "How to Propagate".
And the "Seeds" section did not say explicitly "comes TRUE from seed".
Just that you CAN collect the seeds and should dry them (?)

I have tried growing black and blue from seed and the offspring did not fair too well. They died after a year and didn't look nearly as good as the original. They may have not as well because I had them in a different location, though.

Thanks, everyone for your responses. As short as our growing season it, it's probably better for me to start from new plants each year. Mine are still looking lovely even though it got down to 32 degrees this morning. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be down in the 20s, so that will probably put an end to my salvia and pineapple sage (which is still so beautiful).

Oh my sorry to hear that. At my house, we were sposed to get to 38 last like but I only registered 46 so far for a low. And the next few days are gonna be warmer day and night - so I have more time. :-)

Have you tried cuttings? Free if they take and they are genetic clones.
I am well aware that cuttings are far easier for some things than others.

And here in Zone 3 we have only had light frosts and not killing frost yet?
Usually a hard frost hits us by mid September.
We are a month past, and it has not happened this year yet.

We have freeze warnings too, but the forecast says 37 (not 32, which is freezing in Fahrenheit) so it is really just a chilly night. Right now it's 53 and I'm walking the dog.

It was 27 degrees here this morning, and light frost everywhere. So glad I have my garden put to bed! Amazingly enough, my pineapple sage and black& blue salvia which are up close to the house still look perfect. I will wait leave them until a really hard frost gets them.

I've done cuttings from the pineapple sage with good success, but we are leaving for a 2 week vacation at the end of this week. Probably not the best time to start new cuttings. Sad

We dodged the bullet. Lowest at my house so far ~ 46.

Went out to smell my Brus and did a double take. Tree frogs still making noise! Never recall them this late.

Last year by this time we had two frosts and I had everything in.

Back on topic .... I did save some seeds today Smiling And potted up 7 young Rose of Sharon from the lady down the street.

It's highly unlikely that @Reine ipomoea plants would cross, they are all from different species.

If you are talking about standard morning glory Ipomoea, they most certainly do cross.

No David I'm not, I know they cross I grow them every year. I was referring to Reine's list of impomea. They aren't your standard morning glory seeds and aren't likely to cross. Just wanted him/her to know in case he/she wanted to trade with someone that's all. Didn't mean anything by it Big Grin

I plan on sowing seeds next year of all the Ipomoea I listed. Smiling Thumbs up

Even though each is a separate species, I am eager to see what happens. I do think they will come true from seeds. Most of the seeds were purchased from sellers growing multiple species of MG.

After all seeds are collected, I do want to do some trading Thumbs up
