Hi Y'all. I have a bit of a conundrum. I purchased H rosa-sinensis labelled Heartbreak Hotel a few years ago.. I know it was hybrdized by Barry Schleuter from Houston. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2014.

My puzzlement comes from wanting to add pictures of Heartbreak Hotel to the database. The picture currently there, the picture on Barry's site and my plant are all different to varying degrees. Is this a normal occurrence? I even checked out a discussion thread with pictures and they are all varying to my eye.

Variations are normal with Tropical Hibiscus - especially pattern wise.

A really good example is 'Love Story'. It can be single or double and even the kind of doubling can change.

Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Love Story')

Another one is Sun Showers and Cherry Appaloosa .. the patterning and color distribution can change as well.

Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Sun Showers')

Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Cherry Appaloosa')

Temperature can have a drastic affect on color saturation as well. The first picture is Cherry Appaloosa blooming in the greenhouse in January and the 2nd picture is Sun Showers in the green house in the beginning of April. They look totally different from Summer blooms.

Thanks for your reply Anne. I wonder though if the actual base color would change? There is a fair amount of yellow/orange in two of the sites and none that I can see in the ATP database picture. That was where my confusion started.

Hi @Jakobe42 Welcome to ATP. I am sorry, but I do not have this plant for sale. I am a gardener only, not a retailer.

I have not seen it for sale in a while. Barry Schluter, the hybridizer, passed away in 2014.

@Xerantheum I know there are variations but....

Jean .. the pictures in the link are the exact same picture .. just a bunch of them. It's not showing different blooms at all just the same picture.

Oops sorry Anne...I meant the variation between the picture I posted here of Heartbreak Hotel and what is being offered at Fancy Hibiscus under the same name.

I would venture to say that my plant is Absolutely Not Heartbreak Hotel... Sad
