I am hoping to get a few sticky threads up over the winter regarding planting, propagation, care etc. Was honored really to attend a hybridizing workshop last summer where I received a lot of really great information.

4 year old from seed:

Two year old seedling
Thumb of 2015-09-27/magnolialover/7640b2

And a one year old seedling
Thumb of 2015-09-27/magnolialover/4c0f08

Am hoping for flowers on the four year old next spring. Suffruticosas (a specific tree peony originating in China) are what many of mine are and I am told they take the longest, but are also well worth the wait.

I sure hope so, it looks promising. I was also explained in the class about seedling/plant maturity. Age does matter and although the size looks like should be flowering, the plant itself may not be mature enough to do so. Something that never crossed my mind.

Your seedlings look wonderful Tracey! Hopefully, you'll get to see blooms once they mature.

I have been told there is no such thing as a bloomless tree peony..., Hilarious! and to continue with patience. The reward will come.
Thanks for the kind words Caroline.

Direct sowing of seeds outside is the easiest.

Tracey,

It must be exciting to see a new tree peony like yours. Can you see any flowering buds this year? Thumbs up

I have got only one black seed from my Snow Lotus. What am I supposed to do now? Shall I just put it in the ground? Please advise.

Thanks.

I got a little packet of peony seeds from China. They are wrapped in a wet paper towel in the fridge just like I did Japanese Iris. I hope that is a valid process.
Don't make fear based decisions.

I select a place with good drainage, depress my finger into the soil to the end of my fingernail and place the seed in that hole. I then cover it with soil. A little mulch over that and you are good to go. Fresh seed works great this way. If you have older seed, it may take longer than one season to germinate, but carefully mark you seed spot and watch the progress.

Thank you Tracey. I'll plant the seed and wait. Are you saying that the seed may germinate next spring (2016)?

Possibly yes, but if it doesn't, don't give up. It likely will by the next year. It's really all about timing and how hard the seedcoat is.

I did planted 45 seeds two years ago, I ordered them from Cricket Hill Garden, i thought it was a total lose, but i found 6 little tree peony after my fall clean up. I did transplant two of them last week, they already have a good root system going on, I'm pretty excited.

I'm pretty excited for you too. Every year I pop a few seeds in and monitor the progress. It's fun, and next year I hope to have some first flowers.

The seeds this year are all beige color so I assume these are immature?
They are in moist vermiculite.
Maybe I will get some peony seeds from the NARGS seed exchange.

Do your seeds experience frozen ground?

Tan seeds usually germinate well. The full seedcoat (black) is not in place so they usually germinate quicker from my experience.

Frozen ground for half a year here usually.

That is encouraging.
The seeds have darkened some now they are less beige, and more tan colored.

Can I ask what tree peonies seeds you order from Cricket Hill Garden? Chinese/Japanese/Rockii?
The Rockii seeds are the most easy one to grow.
