We are having a very green summer this year. Except for our "flash drought" in July and part of August, there have been regular rains and the pastures are lush. It is still hot and humid (always) and will be until about mid-October when we have a few dry autumn days (usually).

This year's replacement pullets have started laying and eating full tilt. I'm glad that they have plenty of pasture to graze and hunt on so that the feed bill is spared.

Two starving mares have joined my herd of pensioners - well not yet, they need a lot of special care to get them ready for that. Their owner died and they have been fending for themselves for a few years until rescued recently. There was some doubt that they could be rehabilitated but we're giving it a try, and I think they will be fine - eventually.

Anyone else out there with farming news? How about you @AnnaZ?

At last a new thread for a new month.

You are kind to give those horses a good home.

How about some pictures of your newer chickens? I love chicken pictures.

The SU is helping the neighbor..............he's running the bagger for the high moisture corn bag. They're going to make 2, but I can't remember if they were making 250 foot or 300 foot ones. He'll be over there for a couple days yet.

The heifers are now staying where they are supposed to be since DS#1 had to go buy a new electric fencer when we were gone on our 3 day boating trip. They all got out and were prancing around where they shouldn't have been. The kid was NOT amused.

The yard needs to be mowed again; the rain we had about a week and a half ago really got it growing again. It's nice and green.

I turned down a 6 day milking job in November.............the SU was being a pill about the start time (it's the one that starts about 3:30 am and 3 pm). I know he couldn't have helped at night, but, jeez, he could have been a bit charitable about the morning milkings............after all, it was only 6 times. And it wasn't like HE was going to have to milk.........just chase cows around me for, put out the feed in the barn, and put some big bales of hay in the feeders. I think I could have gotten DS#3 to help me in the afternoon, since the SU is going to be helping the neighbor with corn and/or soybean harvest. Really, really hated turning down almost a grand...........

The SU let GS Austin drive the boat when we were on our little trip. He also waterskied. Oh, and I found a house to buy...........we close on Oct. 1st 3044. Bwahahahahaha...............

It is quite amazing to me how instantly heifers, and cows in general to a lesser extent, know when the hot wire is not working! The fence can be dead for months and the horses will never challenge it.

Does the house come with hot and cold running maid service?
