My first thought was it reminded me of Hops
Hops (Humulus lupulus 'Hallertauer')

but the leaves aren't right for that.

I have no idea what that interesting plant is but I'm pretty sure one of our members would be able to narrow it down if as Dave suggested you could tell us where it's growing ... city, state or country and if it's a current photo or what time of year the photo was taken.

Plant found at a nature preserve. Taken late June.

The "flower balls" are one of the many galls on willows, and induced by an insect: a gall midge, most likely. Of course, they are not real flowers at all; they are the willow's growth reaction to the bug infections. I you were to look at them now (months later), they would probably be dried up, and depending on the type, look like a wooden flower bud or open flower. Nice additions for a dried flower arrangement.

Is that a Willow? and if so what kind? I have never seen a willow with such wide leaves and would love to know which one it is.

No wonder I could not find it when going through white flowers of Michigan! The only galls I have around here are the hackberry type. Rather boring.

A gall midge (Rhabdophaga strobiloides) is responsible for the willow bud going haywire and developing abnormally.

Thank you, I have seen galls on different trees and that one is really neat, but I still don't know which willow that is.

There are many, many willows with wide leaves. I just went out in the yard and took these pics:
Salix cinerarea and S. cinerarea 'Variegata'


Salix chaenomeloides


Salix gracilistyla 'Melanostachys' and S. schraderiana


Although those (above) are Eurasian willows, there are many American ones with wide leaves, too.

I've never had any galls on my willows, but they are common in the wild here.

I guess willows with wide leaves don't grow in my area, that is why I was surprised.
