I used to live in California; but now I live in VERY HUMID Georgia, zone 7. Should I keep succulents in the house, rather than outside where it is so humid? I have purchased, put on my front porch, and watched them shrivel up and die. Other's have been put in dry medium for succulents and not rooted yet. Any suggestions?

I live in a rain forest area in Australia and have a large succulent collection which I grow in a green house so I can control the amount of water they receive. They would die if they got the normal rainfall. I water only once or twice a month in summer and not at all in winter. Cuttings should strike easily in summer in a sandy mix in a well lit area. Make sure you leave fresh cuttings to dry (callous) for several days to weeks, before you place them in the cutting mix.

I'm growing succulents/cacti in Houston and the humidity here is probably similar to yours. Mine are on the edge of a covered patio, where they can get some sun, but very little of our frequent rain. I only water them when they seem really dry. This will be my first full winter here, so I'll have to see how that goes.

Not knowing what species you are growing, my experiences may not apply to you.

I live just north of Houston and have grown many kinds of succulents since 1981. Now a days, my collection is mostly made up of Euphorbia caudiciforms and caudex growing plants of all kinds.

These plants are outside when Spring temperatures are above 40°F until temperatures start dropping into the low 40°'s and frost is in the forecast. They are in mostly sun to mostly shade, depending on the species. During the Winter they are indoors(l don't have a greenhouse), and get watered hardly at all, depending on the species. Some plants might get a little water 2 or 3 times in the 4 to 5 months they are inside.

Over the years, l have learned terra-cotta pots work best for me. Seldom do l use glazed or plastic pots. And my soil mix is very fast draining. I add lots of perlite and crushed pumice, into bagged potting soil. The mix is about 30% soil for most of my plants. If a plant isn't thriving l make adjustments to the amount of sun and the soil mix.

The plants do well during the days of heavy rains. They also can dry up real quick when it doesn't rain, because of the soil mix l use and the clay pots. During the hot, sunny days, depending on the size of pot and plant, l water daily.

Thank you so much for the advice. Unfortunately we have had a very rainy summer plus my whole yard is shaded by trees. I do have a covered porch and have kept succulents on porch. If I put them out in a sunny spot in the back yard; I'm afraid I'll forget them and the rain will come unexpectedly. I haven't watered them at all. I do let cuttings callous. My son is building me a Greenhouse in the one sunny spot I have in the back yard.....so hopefully that will work. Only the one's I buy end up dying. The one's that fall off the plants in retail stores or Nursery's, and I pick up off the floor, are still doing okay...LOL Gee, I'm telling on myself, but I always ask if I can keep them!
