I started some Brugmansia Arborea seeds in my basement in March of 2014. As time passed, only one plant made it. I potted up as it got bigger and in 2014 it grew to about 3 feet or so. It was wintered over in my basement with everything else.

Now it is over 6 feet tall and has yet to form a Y. It does appear to have some branching forming, but no Ys. I know the difference and know what Ys look like from other Brugs.

Throughout its life it has been watered (daily in the summer) and fertilized adequately (weekly with 10-10-10 in summer). It is a handsome plant and has nice leaves and nice form. On my deck with other Brugs in full sun.

But no Y. Why? Is it just a matter of time? I am presuming as much and there is so little on this topic on the web. Will it be 9 ' tall before it Ys? Soon I am gonna say screw it and just make 3 or 4 cuttings from it and just go with that. It is my first attempt at seed.

Note that I made 2 cuttings last year from another Brug (NOID) taken from an awkward branch quite low which needed to go. These were definitely below any Ys. One died, but the other Yed at about 10 inches and it is now less than 30 " tall and has 12 blooms. Its stem is ~ 1/2 as wide as the Arborea.

I have had lots of brugs over time and never had one like that but I do now,( it is called Sunset. I was told same as Maya) it is getting pretty tall but no sign of a Y there is nothing you can do to make it Y guess no one has had a reason to investigate further. either it does or not .guess I will just let mine grow until it is too big to carry in and out since I cannot leave it outside in the winter.

You might cut the top with about 2-3 feet of trunk attached and try the "short standard" method.At the least this will get it down to a manageable size while you wait for the "Y"

Been using 10 - 54 - 10 on my Brugs that are blooming. Maybe that would do the trick - heh

WELL THE ONE I HAVE IS ALMOST 4' and this morning I see she is starting the Y I have been feeding her Bloom Booster, now if only my Varigated would do the same.

Update. I do know what a Y is and looks like. Brug 2 has some branching going on, but no Y. Is is though throwing some buds. Needless to say I am pleased cause I planted the seeds early last year and the plant is nearly 6 feet. It is Arborea species.

Note that the main stem did cease growing vertically, which was fine with me. I think part of it was bug attack.

David, as others have said there's not much you can do, other than when you bring it in, cut it down and do the short standard thing with it so it's not so gangly. It will take up less space through the winter that way, too.

I've had some that Y'd at 3ft. and one, I think it is a Frosty that went up 7ft. and took 2 years before it finally Y'd. It's a 9ft. tree now.

I've had cuttings bloom while still rooting in water too. Ya just never know with these plants, it probably varies by type. Some are more vigorous than others, make bigger leaves, bloom more often, smell different, have bigger flowers etc. etc. This one, Monster White, I got as a 10in. cutting in spring 2012, and by July it was a 3ft shrub with 25 flowers.


On the other hand, I paid a fortune from Logee's for a start of a variegated one, got a very small plant, coddled and loved it, potted it up, then finally put it in the ground in desperation and it just never put on a single new leaf. Not one.

Thanks Elaine and all others for the info, encouragement, etc. I will try to get a pic that shows it has NO Y when it blooms. Hopefully It has at least 2 buds which I think will pop before cold here - but I am getting close.

Last year I lugged my at the time only Brug in around Oct 15th or so. It had 22 blooms. Heh.

The seed grown Brug discussed here is actually taller than the other. Heh

The way I have always learned is that the plant WILL NOT BLOOM until it has Yd that is why people request cuttings above the Y so yours must have a Y although not very distinctive.
