Thread OP

I found this plant in an area with 90% shade along a field border in upstate NY. It was growing amidst wild ferns and tall grasses below several mature deciduous trees in an area that has been allowed to grow wild for at least 40-50 years. It was in May, and the plant stems were just a few inches tall. Each plant had a small crown of leaves. The root system is shallow and each plant has a small white tuber attached to it.

I transplanted it as an experiment to see if it could propagate as a ground cover in my garden (outside of Boston). So far it's done well and the leaf crowns have grown a lot, although it hasn't grown any new shoots.

I'm dying to know what it is! It looks like a potentially nice ground cover in a partial shade area. I've looked at a bunch of Crassula species but none fit the appearance perfectly.

Thanks for any insight!

Perhaps a type of Kalanchoe?

Growing wild in upstate N.Y., my first thought was maybe Bearberry of some sort: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

It's fairly unlikely that Kalanchoe would be growing wild in upstate New York. May be Allegheny Stonecrop (Hylotelephium telephioides) or something closely related.

Kent is good, it sure looks a lot like some type of Hylotelephium!

Another vote for some kind of Hylotelephium (some of the former Sedums.)
