Participating in parts one and two of lily judging class is somewhat of an eye opener for understanding what to look for in quality stems. It's not always what a layperson would thing is important or not important.

That said, good judging does come with experience and knowledge, and not every ranking is always fair. But, judges do their best. One of lily breeder Ruth Cocker's stories about lily competition is about one of their seedlings they had entered. Not only was it a "perfect" stem, it had spots on the petals that added to its beauty, and that was something very unusual in the parentage. The judges thought the spots were fallen pollen grains and downgrade the stem.

Øystein, did you make those boxes?

Or, if they came that shape, what are they from?

(Nice crop of lilies, by the way!)

I bought the boxes a place they sell fishfood and where fishermen can deliver fish. But the boxes where brand new, no smell of fish. Growing lilies this way gives me bulbs that will have flowers next year without taking too much space.
From seed this year i grow OTs,trumpets,4n trumpets, asiatics, 3n tango x 4n tango, martagons and i have two seedlings of Pardalinum. So far my speciosum seeds have not germinated yet.

No need to send anything! I can get the fish boxes here too, but they are always the same shape that is different than Øystein's. I have access to various sizes, too, because the styro containers they use for transporting vaccines and live organs to hospitals work well, and a friend works at a hospital. But when I display finished styrofoam troughs at gardening functions, people always ask me where they can get them.

Oh My! Absolutely not! I am most active in the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS), which is the American counterpart of the British Alpine Garden Society (AGS). I write several articles a year for our Minnesota Chapter newsletter, donate 200-300 plants to the two yearly plant sales, I am the plant sales organizer, past vice chair and chapter chair, and I am a moderator for the National organization's forum web site ( http://nargs.org/smf/index.php ). The functions I mention are things like we are speakers at other garden clubs, participate in society fairs, or do classes on making styrofoam troughs. In our lily society I am far less active. We only have two meetings a year plus a show and bulb sales, but I work most weekends and which make priorities a challenge. I also participate in several other forum sites (not just cubits).

The functions I mention are things like when we are speakers at other garden clubs, participate in society fairs, or do classes on making styrofoam troughs. (A society fair is when an organization [like an arboretum or a nursery] hosts a public "get together" of different plant societies or clubs where we each can set up a booth or use a table to display about our individual societies. Its great to talk with people of the similar likes, learn, and recruit new members.)

It's raining heavily now, so I only took a pick of this empty trough in the garage. Not a best creation (and not mine), you can't even see that there are gouges taken out of the sides.
