This is a known limitation. This feature is meant originally for cultivars. It's on my to-do list to make it work right with non cultivar plants.

I had mine growing as a tree but really wasn't happy with the way it looked. At Hetty's suggestion I chopped it way back. It's starting to bush out nicely. I think I will be much happier with it now!
