Okay, this isn't the greatest image in the world but I'll still bet someone will recognize these pods.
I live in NW Arkansas and this was at the edge of a field, tangled up with briars and other things, next to some buckeyes along the fence line where it stays wet much of the year and has full sun or close to it. It had some canopy in the form of the other plants next to it.
Can someone tell me what it is?

If The pods turn orange it's what we used to call Chinese Lanterns. After it turns orange dried and used as ornamental

You definitely put me on the right track. I believe you to be absolutely correct as far as genus being Physalis, of which, according to the wikipedia, Physalis alkekengi is the chinese Lantern. You may have the species right as well but there are some 75 - 90 species of Physalis and mine could be a weedy annual knock off instead of the real thing. Watching to see if they turn that beautiful color will tell the tale.
