Tee you only need one tree. If you want to try some cuttings next year of a very very tough fig tree, remind my come spring and I will send you some cutting.. Our 50+ year old tree has never had anything done to it, except be watered once in a wall.

I bought 2 figs trees this year.. going to bring them in and see if I can get them to overwinter.. figured next year I would do some cuttings and keep my fingers crossed that I can protect them outside enough to keep a couple in the ground.. I bought Chicago hardy & brown turkey.. my neighbor as a child had a huge tree in his yard and the figs were over flowing.. but I am 40 mins away and a bit colder here

my fig tree is over 50 years old and we do not do anything for or to it. Thought I did shorten it a little this year, was getting to close to the power lines and I would breather trim than let the butchers do it.

I love figs. My neighbor has a huge Brown Turkey fig tree. I made Raspberry Fig Preserves this year and they are great. I would love to have one of the variegated trees but it is not worth alot to me. I love beautiful variegated plants but not to break the bank. I can get cuttings of my neighbor's Brown Turkey fig (Solid Green) if anyone wants any. Thumbs up

Tee, if you're still watching this - I have a 'Chicago Hardy' planted near my house (very near) and on the south-east aspect. It didn't even get nipped last year, I had expected it to freeze to the ground, at least. They are root hardy in our area, at least (I also have that 6b/7a thing going on). The fruit isn't as sweet as dried figs, but they aren't sweetened and drying often concentrates flavors.

The owner of the nursery that I got it from also grows 'Celeste' and 'Brown Turkey', although I'm not sure if he is working with a micro-climate, but he lives pretty close to me.

I pick my figs by a 'feel-test' - if they're soft and pull off with just a bit of pressure, then they're ripe. I didn't get any until early August this year - it's been suggested that it was because it was so dry.

I will also gladly share cuttings with anyone this coming spring.
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

Actually now would be a good time to take cuttings so folks can get them started and well-rooted. I always do cuttings in the later summer/early-to-mid fall and have excellent success. Even if no one wants some cuttings from you, sheryl, you could start a few more plants for your use.

the two that I brought in wouldn't fit under the lights so I had to cut a few pieces off.. good news is the cuttings have green buds on them already

I'm still watching, Sheryl. I like raw figs even better than dried but do like both. I'll remember 'Chicago' come Spring. The back (south) side of our house is brick, absorbs the warmth of the sun in winter, and does provide a mini-climate. I've been zone-pushing with a number of things here. I grew figs in CA but that was a very different climate. Big Grin I think I had Celeste, for one, out there.

Sounds like the exact place I put my fig, Tee. I wanted something to shade the very hot wall in the summer but let it warm it in the winter and the fig is perfect for that. It has also been *very* fast growing - it was 10" high and a single stick 2 years ago - it's now about 15' with many branches.

And more branches= more figs!
