Blooms from some late summer bulbs are a delight in the dullness of late summer. I like sitting pots of colorful plants in dull parts of the garden, and these Pineapple Lilies are drawing attention at the entry now.

I use these purple Oxalis triangularis in pots and in the ground. They've overwintered in the ground here for 4 years now, but they perform much better in pots for me. Foliage of Callas that have finished blooming is still pretty, and the strap like foliage at the lower right of the pic is from some Pineapple Lilies I started from seed. I thought they would be large enough to bloom this year and didn't see any, but considering how big they've gotten, I feel like next year will be the year!

Charleen, I've got a fragrant bloom stalk on the Tuberoses you sent me too! At night the whole area around it smells wonderful! There's a 2nd bloom stalk arising from the pot too Hurray!

Jack, that pink Pineapple Lily is gorgeous! Do you know where it came from? Those conservatory pics are gorgeous, thanks so much for sharing!

Polly, I've been overwintering Callas in the ground for about 7 years now, both some Z.aethiopica (large white Calla) and Z. rehmannii hybrids (the colorful hybrids). I know of a zone 5 gardener with a protected courtyard who has been growing them in the ground without lifting for over 5 years. I've tried Z.albomaculata in the ground too, but they didn't return, so I'm guessing they're not as hardy.

The new pineapple lily was bought from gift shop at Mobot in St L. Tag indicates variety is registared TM of Golden State Bulb Growers PPAF. It took quite a while just to tour the gift shop there. Soon as you enter, there's about a 1000 orchids on display for sale...
