By Catmint20906

Many of us envision a peaceful paradise where butterflies float, serenely sipping nectar from the beauty we have created. For me, the reality of a butterfly garden is humming, vibrant, and thrilling beyond anything I ever could have imagined. Here are some tips for creating a butterfly garden of your own.

Wonderfully written.

I agree, great article and links. In my quest to add in native plants as much as possible, I'll also make note of those that attract these pretty little critters. I don't know one from the other, but do enjoy them when they show up.

thanks, Evelyn--you are very kind! I have moved across the country and have been trying to create a new pollinator garden where I live now in the Pacific Northwest! This will be my second growing season--hopefully we will move from 'sleep' to 'creep'. Crossing Fingers!

I ended up going back to the tried and true pollinator favorites-- echinacea, monarda, yarrow, rudbeckia, and so forth. I also had a few favorite shrubs and trees in MD that I purchased for here-- dogwood, lilac, and ninebark. This year I focused more on bulbs that have no pollinator value but i like to look at them lol-- like daffodils and tulips. I also have gotten several seed packets for favorites of mine like tricolor viola, borage, zinnias, cosmos, and poppies. well, fingers crossed! Crossing Fingers!
what have you been planting? where in northern california are you located? (my apologies if you told me this somewhere else and I have forgotten!)

Robin ~ I live in Somerset near Grizzly Flats. If you don't know the area, it is southeast of Placerville, between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. It is about 3500' in elevation. It snows here every winter, and it is hot and dry during the summer. So you can imagine that my favorite seasons are spring and fall. Though sometimes spring is like winter and fall can be like summer until it turns into winter.
Sometimes it is different though. We had snow in November and December. This January has been like spring, though it could change without warning. It is cold but warms up a little to 50°, though today is supposed to be 60°! It is still around 40° in the morning.

Oh, and to make more of a challenge to gardening, we have hard clay soil, deer, wild turkeys and the occasional jackrabbit, skunk, fox, coyote or mountain lion (cougar).

(The first year's garden was deer food.) Sighing!

I don't know the area well but I recall it is beautiful! Thumbs up
It's still chilly here, too, though I can see crocuses and bluebells sprouting up.
Not much wildlife here beyond the occasional squirrel--cougars sound like they would be scary!
