Here we are at week's end and a bit more progress has been made. There are now 18 roof panels in place, exactly half. There are 16 front wall panels in place with the two sliding windows, the sliding door, and the gable wall panels (8) yet to be done. I can see little if any tint in the wall glass but there is definitely a color shift with light coming through the roof glass, greenish in direct sun and bluish in the twilight.

I hope to get the fascia boards in place between the roofs and glass and that covered in vinyl so that the gutters can be installed. All the gutters on the house are 4" but we are putting in 6" gutters above the solarium because of the huge amount of water coming off the three roof-lines. It will be interesting to see how the gutters go up since we are dealing with three roof levels adjacent to the solarium. Hopefully, all the glass will be in place by the end of next week (except for the doors). Perhaps the three columns can be wrapped, the main beam wrapped, and the beaded-board ceiling with five additional beams (perpendicular to the main beam) put in place. I just hope to see wood there, not the stain or paint yet. That may have to be delayed for electrical to proceed and if so maybe, just maybe the tile floor can be started by the end of the week. More likely, the flooring will be done week-after-next. I would rather the tile be in so that the large potting/packaging cabinet can be moved out of the garage. I have to be thinking about building my temporary greenhouse in the garage for my plumeria to over-winter, but that cabinet has to be moved out for the greenhouse to go up.

Nice ! I'm jealous ! (haven't been out here in a few months, so it's nice to see what's going on). You're making great progress :)

Thanks, Carol. This is actually the first time I have even posted anything on the "Greenhouse" forum. I have been posting the progress (mostly lack of Whistling ) on the "Orchids" forum, and the thread is "sunroom". I completely forgot about the greenhouse forum.

This has been a great challenge for me, but with the Lord's help, I have been pretty patient.

Hi Ken. I was reading of your "project" over on the orchids forum. Not to hijack your thread, but we built a sunroom last year. I won't bore ya'll with all the particulars (unless you want me to start a separate thread for it) but I will show you the "before" and the "finished product".

Not lots, depending on what I'm doing. I've kind of made it my "office" and keep my laptop out there.

Actually, we made it for the cats............if you don't believe me, just ask THEM!!!!

I sort of understand the cat thing. Our Puff just loved to spend the day out on our screened-in porch, and she has whined ever since the porch was dismantled. We don't let her out to roam. She is strictly an inside cat. Now she just sits at the French doors, looking out at the backyard or at the workers. She is going to love being out in the sunroom, particularly since she will be able to do so 365 days a year. This space will be 600 sf. and will probably become our great room, where we will spend a lot of time.

So you have three cats?

Oh, no..............we have 5 that graciously allow us to live with them. All rescues. Ours never get outside either.

Our sunroom is only 7x20........zoning would pretty much only not grouse if we squared the house off because we are not far enough back with the house to begin with. Never mind this house is the first one made of wood after man moved out of the caves, so obviously no zoning laws to contend with then. I wish it could have been at least 10x20. But, 7x20 is better than nothing. Green Grin! It was constructed with the intent of it being a passive solar room. It did pretty good last winter.

Re: budget................We had hoped to get it built for 10k..............har, har, har..............cost 22k by the time we got done. Sticking tongue out

I appears difficult nowadays to get anything built in budget and on time, doesn't it? It will be interesting to see how much "solar-heat" advantage we gain in the winter months. We are using state-of-the-art glass that reflects most the infra-red and practically all of the UV spectrums. It is also supposed to have a super-high insulation factor, so during the winter months, little heat is suppose to escape and little cold is supposed to enter. During the warm months, the cool is supposed to stay inside and the heat outside. Time will tell what those stated factors really mean. Everything looks good on paper! Whistling Just to be safe, we are installing a dedicated AC/heat unit in this room, a 1 1/2 ton unit that is rated for 1500 sf. of floor area, and installing two ceiling fans in the "porch" ceiling, a fan design that is supposed to move twice the air as an ordinary ceiling fan.

@drdawg do you have that sun room all loaded up with plants now? Any pics? (or did I just miss them somewhere else on the blog?)

Thank you, Carol. We are enjoying the space more than I would have even dreamed. Though the TV may be on in the great room, we find ourselves out in the solarium much of that time. Our plan was to put a huge flat-screen against a brick wall out there, but now we are reconsidering. Whistling

That solarium is gorgeous! I am very envious. Wish I hadn't used up all my "whines" for this year. Whistling

We were away for 2 weeks and had a furious wind storm. We had no damage except it tore the solar cover from one side of the roof. I'm hoping I can still reuse it next year, but if not it's not a total loss. I'll just use it on the pool. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
