Any ideas what this vine is? The flower is large 5" (13cm) in diameter and the length of the leaf is about the same. It is growing in a garden here on the island and flowering today, which is the start of spring here.

Maybe Passiflora vitifolia? It's really nice, whatever it is.

I think it's in our DB here at ATP as Passiflora coccinea.

The leaf shape is correct for coccinea. P. vitifolia has three-lobed leaves.

On looking at the db photos for P. coccinea some appear to clearly have three-lobed leaves. Perhaps those need to be moved to P. vitifolia? It's a nice thing about queries like this in that it seems to often serve at making the db more accurate in the process of making a valid identification.

I'm a bit lost. Please, what was decided for the identification of Gleni's plant?

@greene it must have been P. coccinea since the leaves he provided were not lobed and @Ursula advised that P. vitifolia has three lobed leaves. @Ursula is surely correct since the common name for P. vitifolia includes 'grape leaved Passion Flower' if you search enough. The leaves Glen provided in his photo don't resemble grape leaves, for sure . I concluded his plant to be P. coccinea from the discussion. In photos, the blooms appear to be nearly the same.

Years ago I used to be a bit of a Passiflora addict, I had many different ones as space allowed. In the process, I picked up John Vanderplank's book "Passion Flowers". It is a great resource and list them alphabetically with comparisons of similar species. And yes, vitifolia is ruled out due to the different leaf shape.
Other reds are speciosa, leaves are also three-lobed. There is quadriglandulosa, the leaves are entire or asymmetrically three-lobed and quadrifaria with leaves which are entire margin serrate, or double serrate.
Other characteristics (besides bracts, which are also important) are the Corona filaments. Listed for coccinea, outer rank deep purple, and white or yellow at base. That also points to coccinea, as the others are different.
I would think if it is a species, coccinea fits.

This next bit is somewhat off topic as this is the ID thread and not an Edibles Forum, but I was asked yesterday which Passionflower(s) would be the best to grow for edible fruit. I am in zone 8b. Any suggestions?

I grew Passiflora edulis for some years. I had bought it from Logees. The vine doesn't have to be that huge to bear fruit and they were delicious. I did have to bring the plant inside in the Fall here in NJ, but the fruit continued to ripen inside. There are of course others.....
