I think you need about 8 per tote, but I'd have to find the original instructions. You put the pots upside down in the bottom of each tote. This is like a water reservoir beneath the dirt layer. Anyway, I have lots of pots you can have. I tried to get to mine to see how many pots were in it, but there were too many other things back there in the "hospital."

When you're ready to set 'em up, come get the pots.

If by totes you mean the plastic containers, I have two of the 18 gallon size ones, and they hold 6 quart pots.
They are very handy for the plants that like water and can not go a whole day without it in this heat, they can suck up the water on the bottom. I put in the mexican milkweed which is notorious for being thirsty and also some of the hibiscus. Smiling

I put my potted plants that like water in the plastic containers and they serve the purpose of keeping them wet.
I think that is what they are talking about, but i could be wrong.

The totes are for Grow Boxes. Carey went to one of our garden club mtgs and saw a demonstration for constructing one. The gallon pots rest on the bottom of the tote and hold up the "floor" of the box (which is the cut down tote lid) that the dirt rests on. Confused yet? I have the original directions somewhere. Carey probably has the newest ones. You can grow tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, etc. in the box and not have to worry about constant water, fertilizer, most bugs. It's a lot easier to take care of.

I'm not sure Sandi - The totes are taller than they are wide by a long shot. Three pots would probably be more and sufficient. I think I'd have to stagger four to fit them in the bottom. The good news is I can make the soil deeper and water less often....the bad news is I can only fit one, maybe two plants per box.

I do have the instructions and if I can figure out a way to scan them, I will gladly share!

They must be a little different than the ones we used a few years ago. I'll find mine and you can compare them. I think there are probably many ways to make a grow box. I'm just not sure how to post them after I scan them. They'd probably take up a lot of space on this thread.

The only complaint I had was mosquitoes around the water pipe. I fixed that by covering the pipe opening with nylon screening.

The instructions are essentially the same. You should put the instructions in a sticky so people can reference them! Hurray! Hurray!

You're welcome, Josephine. After reading over the instructions, I think I'm going to get mine out again and kill a tomato plant or two.

I was going to re-pot brugmansias today, and clean up my backyard! For so long it's been too hot to even go outside after 9 AM. We're experiencing a thermal inversion, however, where the cool air closer to the ground is trapped by the warmer air above. All the smokey pollutants are prevented from dispersing. Not good for anyone to be outside for very long today. There's so much smoke in the air that people are thinking there's another fire and reporting it to the fire depts.

It was awful yesterday! I called DH from campus because it was so smoky when I got out of class I swore there was a fire off Braker. But campus security wasn't aware of anything like that (and I'm sure they would've been the first to know) and they said it was probably the smoke from Bastrop. If it was that bad in town, I can't imagine what it was like there.
