Hibiscus 'Moy Grande' is promoted as the largest open face Hibiscus in the world. It is the result of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor" where the child plant is superior to either parent. In this case the Hibiscus 'Southern Belle' with it's eight inch blooms was cross with Hibiscus grandiflorus ten inches blooms to create Hibiscus 'Moy Grande' with blooms up to twelve inches. 'Moy Grande was created by Ying Doon Moy of The San Antonio Botanical Garden. He was responsible for the creation of hundreds of different hybrids, including Hibiscus, Ginger, Roses, Papayas and many others, but he is best remembered for this Hibiscus. The name 'Moy Grande' is a play on words, with Mr. Moy's name substituted for the word "muy" in the phrase muy grande which means very big in spanish.
