The best tip I can give when photographing plants is don't just stand in front of the plant or bed and point down with your camera or phone - bend your knees or crouch down (or use the really useful tilt screen which I have on my camera). Being more on a level with the subject gives much better results.
Even if you don't have a macro setting on your camera you can get much better shots if you take the shots from lower down.
