I have a four-year-old Pink Frost Hellebore that will have to be moved in the next couple of weeks due to some work on the house. The plan is to put it in a pot, and I hope to put it back into the same spot after the work is completed. Would it better to leave it in the container until Spring and replant then, or would it be strong enough to handle going back into place after a few weeks?

My daughter and husband moved a couple of years ago in August, Debra. I had planted an awesome perennial garden for them and a nice big 6yr. old Hellebore was one of the plants we took with us to the new house. I potted it up for them, getting a good big root ball. It stayed in a pot in the shade at the new house until November when I planted it, and it bloomed the next February! Never missed a beat.

I think you'd be fine to just put it right back where it was before, the sooner the better. In the meantime, get a big rootball so you don't disturb the roots much, and keep it in a similar situation (shade, water, soil etc.) that it's in now. I'll bet it will do just fine.

In your zone replanting in a few weeks should be fine, but Hellebore are know to sulk when dividing or moving them.

Thank you, Bob. Sulking I can handle--had two teenaged grandnieces living here for awhile. I'm just not familiar enough with Hellebores to know if moving it around so much would seriously damage it. Feel more confident, now.

If its just for a few weeks... I'd probably just dig it with a large rootball and leave it on top of the soil under a tree...

Here in middle ga... I've dug patches of hellebore to give away... And... Had them go begging...
Years later... They're still growing and blooming... Even though they were just left on top of the soil!
It can be difficult to get a healthy hellebore to fit back inside of one of those pots... Without doing a lot of root pruning... Much easier on the plant not to pot it.
