I still think that we should place a collective order -- with one person being the repository for funds, who places the order and then reships the rhizomes when they arrive. That way -- no one would get killed with shipping and custom expenses. And I vote for Tom because he has experience ordering from Tempo Two!!! Green Grin!

I like the idea if Tom is agreeable. What incentive do we offer Tom? Smiling

My import licence expired last year, so I'd have to get a new one. Last year I didn't import any as Keith Keppel had most of what I wanted.

Incentive -- his choice of one of Blyth's new introductions..........?????

Would you be willing to renew your import license Tom? Is that an expensive proposition?

It might be a lot to ask of Tom. Or anyone, really.

edit: I like the idea of ordering Blyth irises from Keith. Did I hear that Barry Blyth is growing some at KK's?

The import licence is free from the US Dept. of Ag. In the past, the exchange rate was quite favorable. The additional cost of sanitation ran about 100 per order. It really only becomes worth the effort if one is unable to get the cultivars here in the US. They are shipped in April, which is the end of their summer season, so the plants sometimes will bloom right away that spring. They aren't always a good indication of what the bloom will look like once they are settled in. Some then don't bloom for a couple years later. But eventually they do just fine. I'm guessing that those of you who live in areas with longer growing seasons will find it different. I've usually started them in pots when they get here, and add them to the garden later in the season. If we would do a group buy, we need to clarify what happens to the bonuses, Who decides who get what? Although, due to the cost of shipping, he didn't send many, maybe one per five plants ordered.

Also it worked best to pay by charge card, and the actual sum of the cost is not determined until shipment is made due to not knowing the exchange rate. There's also a charge for the money exchange on the charge card. That would make for lots of variables, and make it hard to determine each ones actual cost.

Would be a bookkeeping challenge for sure. If it moves forward, I would vote Tom keeps the bonuses as part of the incentive. Big Grin

...or if someone else took it on, she or he would keep the bonuses.

I'm going to wait and see what is in the Keppel catalog. :-D

Trouble for me is that Keith doesn't get the SDBs. Barry is not really dealing with those any more (probably the usual 'don't sell'). It is really a shame because we have him to thank for the modern pink SDBs. He noticed the orange in the throat on one of Ben Hager's SDBs & worked for years with that line coming up with pinks (which is a recessive) especially 'Chanted'.
Dave Hall in IL started doing the good work with TB pinks in the 1940s & was once accused of painting his irises that color at an exhibition by the newspapers.

Don't know how my finances will be next year, but I would like to get some of his dwarves and medians. I'm sure that I won't be able to afford any new introductions.

Tom -- if it's too much of a pain, then I wouldn't blame you a bit for saying *thanks, but no thanks*. If it's do-able, and you'd like to -- then great.

Your decision, my friend.

Lucy -- I did not know that Barry was responsible for pink SDB's. I'm so glad that you're here to educate us about these little details that we would otherwise never know. Thank you Thumbs up I loved the part about about Dave Hall being accused of painting his Irises. Oh my!! Blinking

Deb -- I agree with you about the bonuses. Anyone who takes on the job of managing a group order deserves the bonus Irises. Good thought. Thumbs up

I agree about the bonuses.

I also agree with Lucy - unfortunately most Blyth dwarfs and other medians don't make it to our shores and he has some rather spectacular ones that I would love to have in my garden. The Blyth dwarfs I do have are really good growers. I got some intermediates and border bearded this year that I hope do as well. But some of my favs are only in Oz.
