I was actually happy for the hard frost! Last year it was November before my dahlias were looking sad enough to be dug. I have off work this coming week so I will have plenty of time to get them cleaned up and tucked into their winter beds.

@frankrichards16

So do I, Frank, but I'd like to enjoy the dahlias for another few weeks and normally we do.

My favorite in fall is the Powhatan crape myrtle:

That is certainly some pretty fall foliage, Arlene. Can see why it's your favorite!

Thanks, Liz. Even the next door neighbor came over to ask what it is and she's not a gardener (at all).

Sorry to hear it, Karen. We all wait so long for lots of blooms and an early frost ends the show in one night.

My Amur maples are a bright spot, like your trees Arlene. The crabapple tree is leafless but is covered with bright large red berries. Almost like it has leaves. Wish they just didn't all into my garden bed. Wonder if I could cover it with plastic to catch them. Or at least most of them. New peonies and lilies are in the ground, the soggy wet ground. Thumbs down Just have to hope they don't rot before freeze up. We are running in the mid to low 30's at night and in the 50's during the day. We have had a day or so of hard frost but that was over two weeks ago. Keep expecting to wake up to a frosty morning one of these days. Time to shut down the pond. What a miserable task. But I do love the crisp autumn when the rain stops.

Within a few days Powhatan should be in full color. I do love all the fall colors.

I bet you could put down plastic to catch the berries and save yourself the job of retrieving them from the garden.

Last Friday I received some replacement peonies for some I had ordered. One had just one eye - not acceptable. The other had NO eyes and that replaced one that had NO eyes. It teaches me who won't get my business in the future.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (a little late), Mary!

You're left with photos and good memories. It's all so nice and clean now. Your dog doesn't help you just as Smitty is no help to me!

I couldn't help noticing your green bucket. I have the same one and love how sturdy it is.

Just lifted all my dahlias. Forty clumps. Sadly my all time favorite American Dawn only has one good tuber. I guess one is better than none.

I better get back at it. Time to rinse them.

Oh my aching back!

But all washed and divided. Will label and pack on Sunday.

I'm pretty sure I ruined my American Dawn too. I gave my neighbor one. So perhaps hers will have multiplied sufficiently.
