Found these at my daughter's house in California. They look delicious but are they edible. Please ID them for us.

If it is a Nandina, I'm not sure if the are edible. We don't eat them.
The birds love ours when they turn red.

They look like two different plants to me; the plant in the photo on the left looks to have smaller leaves than the plant in the photo on the right. Larger photos might help identify the plant, maybe a photo from a little distance, showing the full size of the entire plant, a photo of just the leaves, maybe a photo of the bark? If it is Nandina, the berries/fruit are edible to birds but I've always heard that they are toxic and not for human consumption.

For safety, I wouldn't eat any berries until certain identity is established.

Edited to add: The time of year the photos were taken might be of help also.

The first looks like Nandina, the second looks like privet ( ligustrum japonicum ) Both poisonous invasives.
While the birds do indeed eat the Nandina berries... Those cyanide berries have been in the news due to them killing the poor hungry birds who had nothing else to eat...

stone, thank you for sharing that link ... I had no idea! I used to see Mockingbirds eat the berries from the Nandina domestica in my yard; not sure why since there was always plenty of food in the area for them ... never found any dead birds thank goodness! I really thought birds were smarter than that ... that they knew what was harmful to them and what was not.

For the most part, that might be true Lin, but you have to remember these are not native plants. When animals come in contact with non-native that they are not adapted to then they can be fooled.

Jay, I hadn't even thought of that!

Nandina domestica is listed as a Category I Non-native invasive here in Florida ... and yet I see it for sale at big box stores all the time, along with the invasive Mexican Petunia (Ruellia simplex) and so many others.

It does look like Japanese Privet (Ligustrum japonicum), I've read that the berries are toxic when ingested.
