I am so happy to get our herb forum back , and want it to be active.
I have noticed other forums have a plant of the week and thought it might work here?
Maybe we could make suggestions of herbs we would like featured Here?
input?

Oooh, there are so many! I can start with my favorite four:

Basils - favorites
Cilantro - love it or hate it?
Dill - as butterfly food?
Mint - keeping it contained

If you don't ask, the answer is always 'no.'

I think it would be a great idea. We could start alphabetically, roll through the alphabet then start over again? Angelica would be a lovely one to start with. I have no idea how to implement this, I think there is some fairly easy process. Perhaps our moderator knows how to do this? @Patti1957

A second thought: as we discuss each herb, it would be really good to fill in the database as much as possible and also add in comments, particularly how we use each herb.

Cinda, can you give a link to one of the forums that has a plant of the week so that I can get an idea of what you are wanting?

Check the daylily forum and I believe the iris forum also has one going

Edited to add: I was mistaken about the iris forum, but the hibiscus and plumeria forums are also using this feature.

Well looking around it seems I have learned some things

The daylily forum has a daylily of the day and the salvias forum also has a plant of the day

BUT ...it seems they go to a forum of'' plant of the day'' when they are a week old

My personal preference would be to keep the information here in this forum and make it a weekly thing

You could start a thread and I could make it a sticky? Do you want an herb of the week and maybe a discussion that everyone can join in on for that week? Like the different uses and what everyone's experience with that herb has been or questions one might have about that herb.

Yes
that's the idea Thumbs up
but I don't know if it should stay a sticky , there would be too many stickies after a month or two

Maybe Herb of the Week : SAGE

then a date or number so we could know which one is the most current? Shrug!

Okay, start with a thread about Sage and the next week a thread about the next herb. Each one could have its own thread. Would be easy to find if you did a search and the information on that particular herb could be found on that thread.

Maybe just something as simple as

Herb of the week, 10/26/15: SAGE

I would be glad to start the first one but maybe we could take turns picking and doing a small wright up of a favorite herb?
Then a discussion could follow.
Like.. if you grow it ?
do you like it ?
How do you use it ?
maybe even recipes Smiling

I think there would have to be some order to who was doing what week; also, we'll likely sooner or later get beyond "favorite" herbs, I see no reason we can't do more obscure ones for herb of the week, just start with some info about the herb, how to grow it, how it's used, etc. Smiling

you know share the fun Smiling
Maybe we could take a month until some one else wants to do?
Or have a sign up thread?

How about this idea - pick an herb for the week and encourage general discussion, PLUS have everyone enter as much missing information into the general database, along with comments relevant to their personal experiences. I rather think keeping growing comments and such inside a forum takes away a bit from the database. Kind of a juggling act - but if the first entry for the herb of the week also includes a photo-link to the herb, it would be easy to go directly to the database entry, update appropriately, and still have a lively discussion of the particular herb within the forum.

I would suggest that our moderator be the person to pick the herb of the week, but if we went alphabetically, we could all contribute ideas of which herbs to go with, to give Patti some help. For example, A could be angelica, arnica, artemesia, asarum, asclepia, etc. B could be basil, borage, betony, berberis, etc. I don't think we'll run out of herbs in any hurry.

I believe the reason the other forums have used the fairly new format that Dave created for Flower-of-the-Week was to prevent older entries from popping back to the top of the list once they've moved on. If I am not mistaken, I *think* moderators may be able to close threads? That may well be a good solution to keep the most active herb of the week at the top. Or, could the herb of the week become a stickee, and then be UNstuck?

Yet another idea might be to just open each week to an alphabet letter and have open discussions about the myriad of herbs beginning with each letter. Each herb being its own thread. Lots of options. I do like the idea to explore specific herbs in some sort of fashion, both medicinal and culinary.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

I like the ideas except closing threads . Someone may come to the herb forum and have a question weeks later and a good and common herb may have a thread that carries on for weeks .

Linking is a very good Thumbs up

I guess it would be up to patty to say if she wants the ''job'' of creating a weekly herb discussion?
