BAP is 6-Benzylaminopurine. You asked! Sticking tongue out

It's a member of a family of naturally occurring plant hormones that can cause plants to readily grow. If you, for example, apply it to the cut when dividing fans, it will coax additional fans through new growing points. It can also be used on the bracts of a scape to induce proliferations. There are some who have found or believe that when BAP is applied to plants the new plants will not bloom or set seed for a while. This has not been my experience in the small amount I have experimented with BAP.

As to your second question, you could sell the plant for whatever you wanted. I have found that daylily people are often kind and generous and I try to be a fitting member of the community. In a case like you describe Mayo, I would likely just grow the plant to see it bloom because photos often do not capture the full beauty of the plant. If I didn't like it then, or didn't want to work with it, I might trade the fans for something I like. Or try and use it to pay it forward (which usually means my mother gets it since she pretty much gets first dibs).

I think dealing with the 4 of us as teenagers (at the same time), and resulting in 4 high school grads, 3 college grads, and 2 PhDs all while working full time, has earned her the right of first refusal. And I send her good stuff!

She bought me BUFFALO THUNDER the year after it came out and the card said "Congratulations! I want a fan." Hilarious!

Julie, thank you for your response, I am new (again) and have seen things cheaper then they should be lets say? But always SF, and in the climate I live in, I just avoid them, but I did take notice that they was a huge flush of SF plants on LA. I was browsing your blog today going, ohhh addd that to the list, ooooo I need that.

Let me just say a single fan can be an excellent investment. I bought several single fans from Abundant Daylilies in Florida this Spring that are now 2-5 fans. The single fans I bought from two Northern growers are still only one to two. But since these daylilies are hard to find and sold out or much more expensive from the hybridizers, I'm happy to get the single fans. It's worth it to me to get the pollen to hybridize with. If you are just a grower and don't have the hybridizing bug, I can see why you would be reluctant to buy single fans.
