Here is Blossom Peacock finally blooming after being threatened of being tossed. Told her and a few others that they had one last chance, after no blooms for several years. Another bulb is starting to scape but I won't know which one until it blooms. Been so long I'm not sure which one is which! Only two flowers on Blossom Peacock, but I'm okay with that. It sure has a very tall scape. No scent that I can discern.

Thumb of 2016-04-14/bsharf/7a1e01 the potted bulbs which get sun until 2PM.

The blooming looks as if it will extend from mid March through mid May, given the assortment of different cultivars.

Kelli:

1) Do you know if exotic star is directly related to h. Papillio?

2) Your cross is beautiful! I love the red veins over the white center of the amaryllis. (I'm not as good with amaryllis anatomy/terminology as I am with daylilies....is the center part called the throat like it is in daylilies? Or would it be considered the eye?...)

Hey there, @Kelli - I made a cross too - Picote as the mother, Naranja as the father - just started the seedlings - will take a few years, but I can't wait. Right now, I have over 40 seedlings, and I gave some of the seeds to 2 other people also, so hoping we get SOMETHING nice out of all of that! I made a cross about 3 years ago also - the bulbs are just about big enough to bloom this next year. Problem is, I can"t remember exactly what I crossed! Whistling

Amaryllis Bulbs. I grow them every year in the house during the holidays. The family loves them. None of my sisters are any better at storing the blooms after they bloom. I get snow, one sister in TX the other in SF bay area. We have all tried various ways to over summer them. Nothing seems to work. My bulbs limp over after blooming in the warm house. I set them in a closet to dry out. I have even put them in saw dust. Could I keep watering them and use a brace to keep the leaves upright? It is so dry and hot during the summer that most of the time the bulbs waste away. What am I doing wrong.
I keep them fairly moist when blooming, no extra fert. No matter what we try they all waste away.

If I understand you correctly, you have two issues going on. First how to get them to continue to grow through the summer, when the bulb is producing next year's flower buds. Secondly, how to force the bulb to bloom during the holidays. After the bloom, the leaves may droop a bit, but stake the leaves if necessary and keep watering and fertilizing like other houseplants. As soon as frost is done, its probably too hot and dry for them in the house. Try putting the pot outside and keeping it watered and fertilized, in half day sun: Some people plant the bulb in the ground for the summer. For holiday blooms, stop watering in August, let the leaves die back, and force the bulb into an early "winter" dormancy (dark, cool, dry). Bringing it out of dormancy after several weeks, the bulb should bloom earlier than it would if it was outside. Margaret (mcash70 ) is an excellent resource for forcing dormancy. She is very successful at getting the bulbs to rebloom in the winter. Purchased Amaryllis bulbs will shrink after blooming, since they put so much energy and moisture into the flowers. They certainly appear to have wasted away. It can take several years for the bulb to recover and rebuild before it is able to produce another bloom. It takes patience and sometimes luck to get them to rebloom at Xmas in the house.
