I live in Houston (where we struggle with summer heat). I don't think I've found the perfect place for this plant yet. I have one plant that reappeared from last year, it put on a couple blooms, but wasn't outstanding. I'm not doing something right. I have it in partial shade. Maybe I'm not watering it enough. I don't know. When it does bloom, it's really pretty, it's just has a short bloom cycle in my yard.

Lynne, Hibiscus coccineus like all of Hibiscus Section Muenchhusia (H. coccineus, H. moscheutos, H. grandiflorus, H. dasycalyx and H. laevis) are swamp and marsh dwellers. They will adapt to average garden soil but the more water the better. Also the more sun the better they will bloom.
