Oh this could be bad. It just occurred to me how much scion wood/buds I toss in the garbage with every wedding! I often see perfect buds for grafting onto a rootstock on cut rose stems, I would have to try most of them!

Multiflora roots grow really big here. I was planting bulbs a couple of weeks ago and ran into this long woody root. Couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first and followed it to one of the Kordes roses from Palatine I planted this spring! I was over 3 feet from the rose. Well, I'm assuming that root was from the multiflora rootstock, but it could be from above the bud union. I need to check...

I feel like I'm wasting good materials every time I prune roses at the local Botanical garden.
I've tried rooting them, using several different methods i found on here, but so far nothing worked. It wasn;t the method that failed, it was me. I don't have time to water my houseplants, much less check on baby plants, but that doesn't seem to stop me from starting new projects.
The roses that came today from Palatine have super long roots, so I'll be digging deeeeep holes tomorrow. I've been buying bags of topsoil and compost to pile over the base to protect them. The weather is changing this weekend, temps will go down to 20s at night, so I don't think these will be tempted to break dormancy.
I'll lay them out tomorrow to take a picture for you all!
We did get 2" of rain this week, nothing like what people south of us got, but appreciated none the less. Digging today was easy....managed to plant 4 shrubs and a gazillion bulbs. I kind of overdid it when Lowes put the bulbs at 75% off and I got a clerk who couldn't do math and marked them all to $1. I kept telling him the amount but he didn't want to wait for a manager to change the prices. I filled a cart and my punishment is now I have to plant every last one of them. Sticking tongue out Almost there...and my physical therapist can't figure out why I am not getting any better. Sticking tongue out

Fun times in your garden! You'll have so much to dream about through winter. I've had a similar experience with clearance bulbs from Lowe's (several years ago). As I was considering the 75% off bulbs, a manager walked up and said " if you'll take them all, they're 10 cents a bag." I filled a shopping cart for just under $20. There were some large white callas and freesias in the mix, most of which were sent to folks in milder zones, but most were hardy bulbs that I planted everywhere- what fun that was!

I'm doing a three-day course of Meclizine for my BPPV in preparation for the pruning season. I already get seasick when I see rose canes swaying back and forth during the pruning, and a simultaneous attack of vertigo and motion sickness could be dangerous, or at least unpleasant (for me and for the plants in my garden). There's not much room to fall down between the roses. Hilarious!

So far, we've gotten 3" of rain! And just 1/8" of ice. The pear trees still have all their leaves, and the limbs are drooping under the weight of ice.
Zuzu, I hope your medicine works!

I did three nights of Meclizine and three different types of Epley Maneuvers, spaced a couple of days apart, and now I'm sleeping on my back, almost sitting up in bed. So far, so good.

Rosemania just added four Austins to its current offerings, so I asked them to add Lady of Shalott to my previous order. They misspelled the name (Lady of Shallot), but it's grafted, so I'm very happy to have it. I've wanted it for a long time, but my go-to nurseries (Emerisa and Regan) seemed to be selling only the own-root variety, which I did not want.

Our rain turned into freezing rain, and then just falling ice. We are covered in ice, in fact. The poor dogs slipped and fell on the walkway so I didn't even try to go out. Good thing the oldest lab knows how to retrieve the paper from the end of the driveway!
Wish she could go out and open the mailbox too. I'm hoping the trees don't break from all the ice.
Also crossing my fingers that we don't lose power because it is COLD!

Zuzu, you will love Lady of Shalott - I have it in both England and France, and in both places it performs wonderfully. Amazingly healthy, really prolific, blooms from early in the season to late (still lots of flowers now even in the England cold), lovely scent. Smiling

Another recent David Austin that I think is fantastic is Olivia Rose Austin - exquisite baby pink blooms, perfection!

Thank you for confirming my grand expectations, Cliftoncat. I'm hoping it will be similar to Pat Austin, but without Pat's annoying habit of "nodding." The centers of Pat Austin's blooms usually are visible only if I'm lying on the ground looking up. Big Grin

I haven't seen Olivia Rose Austin "in the flesh" yet, but the pictures do look delicious. I love baby pink!

The Lady of Shalott that we have in the south of France had 'nodding' blooms until we increased its supply of water - might that be the problem with your Pat Austin? I love roses and am a sucker for all the David Austins; we have lots and lots of them (even a hedge of Harlow Carr), but sadly not Pat Austin. I made the mistake of paying my first visit to David Austin's plant centre in Albrighton and came back with an addiction and a car jammed full of plants! Green Grin!
