When I moved to my new home early last Spring I brought 2 cuttings from my Confederate Rose that had been languishing in 1 gallon pots for 3 years .. I planted one in the ground immediately and was delighted to see in mid October that it was putting on buds! The buds have matured and have started blooming.

Thanks! What I love most about it is that it starts morphing into pink starting around mid-afternoon!

That's the same one I have. In fact, I have 2 large bushes over 10 ft. tall. I love it. It's good to know that they do grow well in containers. I successfully rooted some stems in water for friends for the first time recently. I see new growth on them already. So they are ready to be placed in soil. Hurray!

One of the few plants I have a lot of success with cuttings. Here all you have to do is cut some limbs push them in the ground and they root.
These are the cuttings I took in the spring and they are now blooming. They are still loaded with buds, but I am afraid the cold weather is going to stop them from blooming.

I was making plans to cut down my confederate rose, since it comes back from the roots in the spring here in zone 8a. But, I was looking out the kitchen window washing breakfast dishes and I'm almost sure I saw tall branches putting out new leaves. Blinking It's been raining most of the day, so I haven't been able to get a photo. Maybe tomorrow. Poor plants are all confused with this extended warm weather. Those leaves will probably freeze by the weekend. How sad! Thumbs down

A lot of my plants are putting on new growth .. and as you said, they'll probably get zapped this weekend.

Yes, even my camellias japanicas, which usually don't bloom until around March have started opening their buds. Quite a number are already showing color, so they will get zapped. Unless I can find a practical way to cover the bush. I don't think it's taller than five feet, but it's quite wide. Shrug!

Can a camellia also be rooted this way?

One thing about rooting confederate rose cuttings, they may lose all of their leaves, but they will still put out roots. It may several weeks, though, so don't give up too soon.

In my experience, Camellias are not all that easy to root and it takes a great deal of time because you are working with brown, woody stems and not green wood which seems to root a lot quicker. Simple layering seems to be the best way for brown, woody stems.

Here's a link that describes and has drawing of plant propagation using layering techniques:

Thank you! Hi and welcome to ATP Ddmom!!! So glad you found us!

I knew that bush when it was just a seed! Utterly thrilled that the two rooted cuttings I took have naturalized in their new home!

Do go to your profile page and post where you're from and zone and all that.
