I posted this on Cubits, but thought you all might like to see the latest project that Connie and I have worked on.

It's been a while since Connie and I got the torch out.

A few weeks ago, my good friend Michelle Savoy Rasa called me and asked if Connie and I could make a bra for a mermaid that belongs to her dad. She has young boys at home and they have lots of friends over. Michelle said that she wanted to cover up the hideous nipples on the mermaid. She said the mermaid was life size. We talked about what needed to be done. I asked her to send me some photos of it so we'd know what we were dealing with. I've included those she sent me in the beginning of this show.

Ronnie brought the mermaid over to Connie's shop so we could work on it there. She is mounted on a rock and is extremely heavy. We could swivel her, but actually moving her was next to impossible for the two of us.

The condition of the mermaid was very sad to see. While she was intact, she was covered in rust from being down at the beach house. Connie and I talked about it and the restoration project began.

I asked Michelle to give me some history about the mermaid she asked Connie and I to work on.

"Approx. 20 years ago MT and his cousin Stout went to First Monday in Canton TX .. They met a local artist that was selling fish made from metal.. MT inquired about a mermaid and the artist told him if he could draw... he could make it . MT and the artist sketched out a picture right there at the booth and the artist said he could do it ... about a month after that the artist was finished and Stout drove out to the man's studio he had behind his house and picked it up.. My dad recalls him living in Fort Worth and his cousin says it was Arlington.. ... The artists initials (Jam) are on the mermaids hand.. the original cost of the mermaid was 1500.00.

Each piece was hand cut and welded .. using metal sheets.. not sure what type of metal.. its original color was kind of platinum ... I'm looking for a photo of it."

Though I've Googled, I cannot find the original artist.... JAM. Hopefully MT or Stout will eventually remember the name. I wish to give the artist credit for an awesome job on this mermaid. She's really beautiful. I can only imagine how much he enjoyed creating her for MT.

If you see this show and know the artist, please send the information to [email protected].

It took me all day to upload the videos and photos we took of this restoration. I hope you enjoy watching the show!

This is the finished mermaid

This is how she looked when she was brought to us.

Ladies, that looks like some hard work! I saw that you were down on your knees on the concrete for part of the welding...ouch!

Love the re-finished mermaid, the bronze color is beautiful.

Thanks Chris and Maridell. I tip my hat to you.

You probably heard us grunting as we got up too! Rolling on the floor laughing It's not as easy as it used to be, but I'm glad we are still able to do cool things like this.

It's been quite a while since Connie and I spent so much time together. We've both had busy lives. That was the best part of the whole process!
