RickCorey said:By the way, when you talk about 'donations' as "someone asks for it and then gets it without a specific quid-pro-quo in return", that is the way I prefer to swap, and those are the swaps I would join. Better suited to fairly common seeds. My word would be "Oink" or "Request", meaning a request that's granted without a matching item specified in return".

Then there is a directed gift, where someone makes a specific offer, perhaps giving someone else first Dibbs if they join a certain swap. I'll call that "giving Dibbs" because it's an oddball notion.

I might be misreading what you wrote, but I'm pretty sure this falls in line or close to what I'm considering a 'freebie'. Not an oddball notion at all. Big Grin If there's a newbie in the group and you want to gift them with something for nothing, that would be a 'freebie' and you would simply agree to a trade that offers you nothing in return.

That works for me! The only other thing I'd ask you to consider is human nature. The rules you laid out are fair and sensible and everyone who signs up would be agreeing to them. But...nobody likes being rejected. If somebody keeps getting their offers rejected I can see people having a lot of hard feelings. Some might take it personally. Others might just turn sour on the entire idea of swapping because they couldn't get most or any of the seed they wanted. I have no idea how to handle that situation. When people get emotional logic goes out the window. Same goes for banning people. You'd have to be very specific on what actions can get you banned and how people can get reinstated. How private will the process be? I can see accusations of unfair targeting being brought if everything is kept secret. You can probably tell I'm a worst-case scenario type of person. It probably won't happen, but it could get ugly if it does.

Absolutely not. Big Grin Trying to predict pitfalls before they occur is the best strategy for maintaining a healthy program. I only got the ball rolling with some of my thoughts about banning, rules, etc... It's up to members, organizers, etc. to flesh it all out. I can certainly offer my opinions, but I'm just trying to bring to light things that should be considered so that others can help prevent any situations where ill will could occur. That sound like exactly what you're doing, too. You're simply taking the ideas a step further and expounding on them, which is great! Hurray!

Just putting this here so I don't forget to think about it later, but...

I'm kind of wondering if in the future there is some way we could let people use the seed swap as a way of 'donating' seeds to give away in a NARR if they want to. (i.e. one or multiple people could donate seeds they don't need that could be packaged and raffled off).

Good idea!

One that could be extended - NARRs, gift-packs for new members, "stashes" associated with certain regional or "Plant" forums, seeds-for-acorns ... who-knows-what.

After Dave rolls out the "production model" and tweaks it a bit, we may find many uses.

I bet a lot of people would donate many saved seeds and some purchased seeds to something that was well-organized and had an energetic volunteer to do the back-end work, whatever that is.
