pot sunk in ground, NO ; and yes in zone 5, but although we've been listed as 5a, could be warmer winters. The planter is on my back patio, and it's no larger than a gallon size. I have overwintered them here in same location with the exception that they were more protected and sheltered than their current position; yet had less potting mix than currently with a bunch of sprouted seedling in one small bin container.

Interesting. Thanks Kayleigh

I have ~ 20 or so seedlings from 2 " or so to 10" or so in my nursery area potted and covered with ~ 8 " of leaves and brome hay. I did not sink them this year - will see how they do. In the past I have always sank the pots.

I have a huge deck planter in the same area on which I tossed ~ 30 seeds.

I miss the one that I had. It was sold with our home on Long Island. The new owners love it as well! (Thankfully)
Unfortunately, friends of ours needed to take the only one they had, down - from the side of their house. They were putting up solar panels and of course the Ginkgo was in the way. :(
It was not a good day for me....
There were no seeds and it was too big for me to transplant.

@gardeningal - If you want some seeds, I would be happy to send you some. I am in Zone 5B so they will definitely be hardy in your Zone.

Once Ginkgo get a bit larger (perhaps 3 feet or so) it is not a good idea to transplant them

Would this plant do well in a terrarium ?

Not unless you know Bonsai. Big Grin Actually, I think it would be far too moist.

That is so cool! Thank you, DavidLMO. We (my husband and I), are currently out of town at work (Which is why I'm not seen at ATP often enough).
We are in Delaware, which is where the tree was taken down. : /
Maybe I could start a seed here, I have a few small pots and fantastic loamy/sandy soil as well.
Hmmm.

I just received one of these plants from a friend who got it free for spending a certain amount at her health food store. She lives in an apartment and kept it in the pot it came in since she got it. Since she doesn't have anywhere to plant it she asked me if I wanted it.
It has roots that are twice as long as the plant. Do I root prune it or dig a huge hole to plant it in? The roots must be about 2 feet long or close to that.

They to have long roots but I do not think It needs a 2 foot hole . How tall is the tree?

I've had one for 10 years and I don't think it has grown more than perhaps 10" - very very slow growing. Also the last to break winter dormancy. But a really pretty tree, love the fall yellow. Good luck with it!

The tree itself is less than 12 inches I'll have to measure when I get some zip back to move.
So if I don't need to dig to the length of the roots that would indicate that the roots should be spread out on a mound of dirt and then covered?

Editing to say the tree above the roots is about 17 inches tall

When I dig a whole not deep enough for the length of the roots , I place the tree trunk at the edge of the hole then kinda let the roots do a semicircle in the hole on the outer edge .
I know it sounds confusing but I can't find better words *Blush*

I transplant a lot of redbud trees and they have terribly long roots Smiling

I don't think ginkgo are terribly fussy

Do you think your tree is a dwarf?
My tree is about 15' and 15 years old.

Ah, missing key information from the plant tag... Yep, further research certainly shows that my cultivar 'Jade Butterfly' is indeed a dwarf - grows slowly to about 12'. Shoot. I put this in our front field hoping it would eventually be a nice stately tree. Guess not. Now wondering if I should try to move it, although that seems a bit dicey. On the plus side, it is a male so doesn't have smelly parts.
