A Wardian Case for Gardeners

By Dutchlady1

At an unplanned stop at a yard sale - I happened to just be driving by - I spotted this piece and immediately knew I wanted it, even though in our climate there is not much need for a Wardian Case.

This is the Wardian case on my patio which was converted to a bird cage when I received it. I took out 3/4 of the screening surrounding it and have used it for a variety of plants, mostly for the more delicate ones. As you can notice the curved dome is still glass so it is protective of the plants. The case is quite large on a tall stand, total height measuring about 7 feet making it clumsy and big to bring into the house so it stays outside permanently, but is covered over the winter. The "rust-ic" charm only adds to the vintage appeal. You'll find the Wardian case to be a versatile unique addition to the garden and thank you for bringing and sharing another aspect of gardening.

That's a great piece and doesn't the weathering and patina just add to its beauty? My DH asked if I wanted him to paint the one I picked up. I was horrified at the thought Hilarious!

Rust and scars of it's age only adds to it's charm. Be sure to show us what you do with it.

See this link. I live 90 miles away from this big city.
Glass House. Lalbagh... Lal means Red, bagh means park. City of Bengaluru.
Completed in 1898, when Queen Victoria still reigned. Designed on the Crystal Palace.

Good find your little piece. Thanks for writing about it.
