I'm only worried about it because I need to get some of the seeds to another person in a timely manner. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a big deal since I know not to start S. coccinea too early lest you end up with monster plants before spring arrives. Smiling

I see that Harris has made SJL the feature of their Facebook post today.

Thank You! to all who shared about where to get these seeds! I just ordered a pack for myself and am so excited to grow them! Last year I was able to get "Summer Jewel Red" plants locally at a very reasonable price and they reseeded themselves well even in that first summer. Hopefully some seedlings will pop up on their own this year but I still plan to get some more of those plants this year. I had good success collecting seed from the red last year and getting seedlings started but lost them when brought indoors. I think I will have better success starting them indoors and planting them outside at the appropriate time after hardening them off. I am really anxious to see the lavender ones "live". Pics are helpful but never seem to completely capture the beauty of seeing the real plant.

I had two plants of the Summer Jewel Red, one plant of the Summer Jewel White and one plant of Lady in Red from Kermit last year. Had them in containers and hope they dropped seeds. I broke some of the seed head stems from each and dropped them into the containers, just in case.

@Marilyn
I think there is a pretty good chance for yours as long as the calyces were dried up and the seed ripe. You can actually easily pull the dried calyces of the stem and squeeze the seeds out of them either to save or if you want to sow some in another container or the ground. Or you can just let them fall in their own. I will be interested to hear if yours reseeded.

Judy

The dried calyces were "good and brown", but I didn't open them up to take a look at them. I'm hoping the seeds were ripe. The 2 different red salvias were containers by themselves and the white one was in a mixed container with two other salvias. I might have to leaves those 4 containers alone this year and hope they reseeded.

Oops! I forgot that I got 3 Lady in Red from FBTS and 2 of them I planted together in a container in the backyard with some other containers around them and new seedlings were coming up in those other pots during 2015. Thumbs up

The more the season progresses, the more I don't care for the color of this salvia. It looks pretty drab and not a pretty color now. I took pics of it May 18 in bloom after I got it, but it hasn't been looking like a pretty color. Maybe the hotter temps have something to do with it, but at this time, I'm not going to grow it again.

I'll have to see if it gets better looking when the temps become cooler in the fall.

I'm surprised that it won the 2016 AAS Flower Award Winner - Regional Winner (Southeast, Heartland, Great Lakes).

It looked like a drab kind of color to me when I saw photos. Partly it seemed like a novelty for those of us who have grown coccinea for years. To be honest I never saw any of the Summer Jewel series as an improvement over the older sturdy types like Lady in Red and Coral Nymph. To be fare these things are kind of subjective.
