My parents always had a beautiful garden on the MS Gulf Coast. On Sundays, after church, we'd frequently drive to Mobile, AL for lunch and then to see Bellingrath Gardens, or some small nursery they'd heard of. My dad had a tiny greenhouse where he'd putter with Azalea cuttings or start seeds.
We never had a vegetable garden, though. I'm first generation tomato killer.

My Mom had beautiful gardens and planters. Veggies too and fruit. When it was rubarb time I ran for the hills, but come raspberry time...YUM YUM It didn't take long before Mom realized I was not the best choice to pick...at least half ended up in my happy little tummy.

Mom grew flowers, dad grew veggies. We also had grapes and pear trees and mom canned both.

When our children were young, we lived in the country and had HUGE veggie gardens. My dad was in charge of all of them. We also had grapes and fruit trees.

Ginger- some crops we grow just for "grazing" at our house! They never even make it in the door.

Vic- it sure helps to have a big garden with children, doesn't it?!

It sure does Trish and now I'm remembering sitting on the front porch as child and then again with my own children shelling peas, shucking corn, and snapping beans. Brings a smile to me. I can even smell the fragrance of them.

My maternal Grandmother lived to 103 and was still tending beautiful flowers until they finally needed car . She was 94. She and Grandaddy turned a giant tennis court into a vegetable garden. They lived in Albany, Texas and I loved going there for the summer.

On my paternal side, the same thing: flowers and vegetables and even plum trees. I loved those plums and plum jam is still my favorite. I did not like the Texas sized horn worms that also liked the maters and "POP" would chase us with them.
