Ok, I finally have the beginnings of a wishlist feature, just in time for you all to use it over the weekend. Here's how it works:

When you're viewing the official swaplist for the swap

http://garden.org/apps/swap/sw...

You will now see stars above each plant name. (If you're on a smartphone it might be just under the plant name)

To add something to your wishlist, click on the stars that appear above each plant name. Give it 1 to 5 stars depending on how much you think you want it (1 being least, 5 being most.) To remove an item from the wishlist, just click the cancel button to the left of the stars.

You don't have to submit anything. As soon as you click, your response is recorded. You can always change it by clicking on a different item.

Later, I will make a special page where you can view just your wishlist items with nothing else, sorted from the 5 stars down to the 1 stars.

Now I don't care how low or high the daily limit is. Now browsing the lists contains its own reward!

Here's a wacky, half-baked idea. As traders star various offerings, they are expressing interests that might be captured for some other purpose (like "Big Data").

Right now the Plant Database has categories for "Have and Want" that name individual people.

Would there be any value in logging how many people put 5 or 4 stars on a certain variety?
If it was just one "Popularity" statistic that was logged, maybe each star should increment that statistic by the square of the # of stars, or maybe the 1.5 power.

1 star = +1 (+1)
2 stars = +4 (+2.8)
3 stars = +9 (+5.2)
4 stars = +16 (+8)
5 stars = +25 (+11.2)

The Plant Database could have a field displaying how avidly people "starred" that variety during ATP Seed Swaps. Over time that would generate "Popularity" rankings.

It would be cool if the stat had some "trending" aspect that aged the popularity. Maybe one stat for "all-time popularity" and one stat reflecting only the current quarter's fashionability.

@rickcorey, can I ask what is your work discipline? I'm amazed. Wasn't aware you can raise a number to a fractional power. Wow.

I'm a little confused (yet again) -- will we be able to see the stars that other people have given to an item, or is this just for us to find the seeds that we want to request, based on our own priority?

FYI @Dave on smartphones the stars are above the plant name. Same as on the computer.

Now to decide what I want most. Decisions, decisions. Smiling

You will not. The stars are only there as a guide to help you later find the ones that sparked an interest.

This way you can star the stuff that looks good. When trading begins, find your starred items and actually get them at that time.

Can someone else check this but when I went to look at SCButtercup's list of seed that name wasn't an option. My phone is out of juice so I can't check if it is under everyone. Thanks!

I don't see SCButtercup's listings, either -- I think somehow Judy got kicked off because there are 20 swap members on the dropdown list?

I'm still trying to figure out if something raised to the 1.5 power is the same as cubing the number then taking the square root (since 1.5 is the same as 3/2) from Rick's earlier post. Don't know if I'm going to get much sleep tonight cause of that.

Lynne, sorry about that!

You're right about the 1.5 power being "the square root of cubed". But I haven't used my log-log slide rule since I got a calculator.

On the Windows calculator, 5 to the 1.5 power would be:

5
x^y
1.5
=
(11.18...)

You have to select "View ... Scientific" to get the "x^y" button.
