I would like to place an order for some Floydcove daylilies. They are grown in FL. When should I ask for the daylilies to be shipped for my zone if I wish them to bloom the same year? Last year, I ordered some daylilies from FL. When they shipped to me in April, the plants looked like they have already been bloomed. There was no blooms from these daylilies last year.

It's a tricky thing to predict. Most of my order from Floyd Cove bloomed this year. I had them shipped mid April. You're trying to gauge when it will be ok to get them in your zone together with what's going on down south. I was told it warmed up pretty quick down that way last year so things went into scape a bit ahead of schedule. I usually tell southern growers that I am for early to mid April but I will be in touch if it's still too cold up here. Never had a problem delaying a bit.

If you really want blooms the first year, I'd advise making sure they get watered in well and fertilized a bit to encourage them.

If I wish to pot them up and start them indoors, is there any harm to the plants if they are shipped in late March? Do you think the plants can get frozen in transit?

I doubt it. I'd just make sure they aren't sitting on your porch in a box of it's going to be 10 degrees.

I always get my Florida plants Mid March. They all bloom and hardly ever has one had the scape cut off. You could pot them up and keep inside until they can go out. Check your weather and have them ship when it is above freezing in your area.

I'm in north central Texas. All mine are in pots anyway. If it got really cold, I have covered them with other pots, until the weather got better.

Thank You! Dot. The lady I spoke to at Floyd Cove said that the first week of April would be safe for my zone. I am two zones lower than you so I guess it sounds about right. I have never spent this much for daylilies so I think I should want to be safe. So excited about my order and hope that these plants will bloom for me next year.

I agree What beautiful orders, Dot and Betty. Wish I can acquire Verdant Glow and Galactic Green this year. But I have already broken my budget so perhaps next year. I got SHARYN LIANNE, PUNCHBOWL, Violet Becomes You, and Frog's Eye.

Excellent choices, Karen! And I know you'll be pleased with your order -- they send really big plants, and their gift plants are really wonderful too. And Karen Pierce is such a delight to deal with too!
