Y'all in the Houston area are lucky, Cheryl. It never got above 32F today and tomorrow AM is predicted to get down to 16F. We even had brief snow flurries this afternoon. Ouch. Sticking tongue out

I looked at the extended forecast here also and no freezes predicted. No complaints here.

Maybe. Geese or cranes (I can't tell which they are) flying north today. It's the first group I've seen heading that direction since they were flying south last fall. They were late coming over last fall and they are early coming back. The sound of them flying overhead has to be one of the most pleasant sounds that nature provides.

We were travelling in Illinois mid-October and stopped at dusk for gas. The sky was alive with honking geese "Vs", presumably heading south. Then they landed in a cornfield next to the station where we had stopped. They sure were noisy, but we both thought it was a neat experience. Can't imagine them going home so early to icey weather up north.

Yeah, right now they seem to be flying into a winter storm. They've been flying back and forth for a long time, so hopefully they know what they're doing! It was a very small group of birds. Probably around 20 or so. There were some light clouds, so I didn't get a good count. If some are already going north here, I expect the big crowds to start coming over soon. I'm pretty far north in Texas.

It's funny, but the Gulf seagulls come to our lake in the winter along with the Canada geese (mcash told me thay were not Canadian geese, but Canada geese). They all seemed to pack up and leave when the weather warmed a bit. We haven't even seen the seagulls this winter! We also have a large flock of geese that have acclimated and decided to stay. That may have something to do with the neighbors' automatic fish feeder.
Just reread your post, needrain. That might be part of our crazy geese flock. If the temps get above 50, they decide to bail. Might have had second thoughts and are returning to the lake of stale tortillas and Doritoes!

Quite a few geese seem to spend their winters in this area flying around and picking the harvested corn, rice and sorghum fields clean.

Probably even warmer where you are, porkpal, than Lake LBJ. Just seems so strange for them to "sense" when to fly north. We've only used one small heater off the patio hoop house, and only for one night so far. I'm not complaining. I'm not a big fan of cold weather anymore.

I hope those geese are somewhere warm this morning. It's cold in Austin. I didn't turn on the heater in the little greenhouse. It was 38 in there at 8:30 after the sun came out.

I think it has to be really, really, really cold to faze the geese! It was 27F here this a.m., but it's warming up nicely and should be around 60F before it's done. Now there are several days without going below 32F predicted, so a few things get to camp out overnight here :).

I'm going through last year's photos. It's discouraging to see all the plants that didn't make it through this past summer. On the bright side....nope there's no bright side. Sighing!

Sunflowers! That's amazing! I still have roses continuing to bloom, but they don't look very vibrant. A few brugs with blooms.

DH put a remote thermometer in the little greenhouse. I told him I didn't think it was working. The reading inside this morning showed it was 54 in the greenhouse. I finally went out after lunch and it was 90 in the gh! Lots of droopy plants. I opened the big hoop and watered everything. Most plants looked good in there. I left them both open overnight. Hope the raccoons don't have a party! Guess we'll be looking for new remote tomorrow!

I've decided to drain the pond and fill it in. The raccoons have destroyed everything. They've eaten every water lily and pulled a couple of pumps out. I'm tired of it. Good winter project!

We cleaned 2 of our little ponds today. Still working on them. I found that after the racoons ate all my 10 year old Koi Crying The best things for me to do was fill the ponds with cheap feeder goldfish. (there are some really pretty ones!) They are too numerous to do a head count (usually) and I don't get attached to them because they hide instead of coming to the surface to play like the Koi did. I don't feed them so the racoons are not attracted to the smell of the fish food.Either. Last year they had babies. It appears that some have survived winter so far. I am glad to have fish again in my ponds. And try, try, try not to get attached. Fortunately, the 'coons are not interested in the plants. But spring is around the corner. That is when we have our trouble. While setting up my garden timer and reworking the hose system. I am going to set up the water sprinkler I got that shoots at any movement again. I haven't run it for a few years. I hope it still works.

We've had feeder fish for a few years. Our pond is in the lower part of the yard. We plan to fill in the pond and complete the limestone patio on top of it. It'll just be a sitting area then. Pesky raccoons even took the fountain spout out and drained the pond while we were gone overnight.

Spring did get here. The cows started having their calves. Four of them already. They are early, but lively even if they are small. The early part is worrisome, though.

Awwww....I bet they're cute! Do you mean they are too early? 'That they may not survive if the weather turns really cold?
