Amazing show Jim. Really need to go away to appreciate our orchids more when we come home.

We had a rainy day off from diving yesterday but are going to get wet in the sea again today. Probably on the boat, too. Sadly it was too wet to do the botanical garden as well but we did have a wonderful sunset dinner on the beach.

Gloomy day as a cold front pushes through. Time for an update on the Spathogolttis plicatta orchids that live under the oak tree in pots.

I was surprised to see only one bloom on the bamboo orchid or Arundina graminifolia. You need some room for this fellow as it likes to sprawl.

Welcome! Brenda. Pretty orchids.

Please take a moment to go to your "Profile" and update it, showing your location. That way, every time you post, your location will show in the upper right hand corner. Knowing one's location is often/usually helpful when questions/answers arise.

Beautiful, Brenda. Welcome to the orchids forum.

Looks like your orchids are growing outdoors? Where (approx.) are you located? (you can put your city and state or country into your personal profile if you like. Then it will pop up in the corner of each of your posts)

Welcome! Brenda! You'll love it here! Beautiful orchids!

Good Lord Jim, you certainly have the bloom market all cornered, don't you! WOW, I can't believe how many things you have in bloom right now! I especially love those 2 Haleahi's....the catt and the chz (how do they both get haleahi in the name?) and the color of the volcano one! I've never seen a bamboo orchid...but it's a great little bloom! Tell my more about bamboo orchids....like where you got it, how it grows, how many kinds are there.....

About all I have in bloom (that I didn't just buy at Tropiflora or in Apopka) is Little Stars! Lookin a little sad and boring in my yard right now....although my big plumeria has lost all of it's leaves but has buds at the tip of each branch (which it usually only does in spring BEFORE it makes it's new leaves!)!

Very strange year in the yard!

Hello Brenda, welcome! You have some beautiful Orchids there! :hearts:

Jim, the Spathoglottis are very pretty! I love the Arundina! And they do get huge, I remember looking at a very large plant of that in Ecuador.

You're sure right about the strange year, Patty. My plumerias are putting out buds too. Not losing too many leaves yet as it sure hasn't been very cold so far. Let's hope we don't get zapped with a cold night before they make it to blooming!

Love those Brassavolas, Brenda. They're one of my favorites, just love that elegant shape not to mention the scent.

Jim, that yellow/red Spathoglottis has to be my favorite of them all. That's the one I nicknamed "opal' because it seems to change color so nicely - starts out distinctly red and yellow and fades through ivory to almost white/purple. They're such fantastic bloomers once they get going, too.

Brenda, your carved coral is lovely and a very happy plant. I so envy those of you who can grow these beauties outdoors. We had an early cool spell so I brought everything indoors then summer returned for a few weeks but I left it all inside and now another cold front has moved in so all is well.

Love your zygopetalum, mine is blooming again but the petals are sort of blotchy compared to your pretty one.

This photo was taken with a flash and it looks like the plant has scale but I have searched carefully with a lens and there is nothing there. It has to be some sort of dust reflected in the flash. Sure scared me for a minute.

Lovely! It surely just looks like some reflection.

Alice, if I remember correctly you were interested in getting some Adenium seeds? My seed horns are getting ready to pop, so if that is so, please drop me a t mail note with your address.

Does anyone use superthrive on orchids?

Welcome! Brenda.

I used to use it but haven't for several years. I simply did not see any benefit when it was used. I know some folks use it to stimulate seed germination and to stimulate root growth, particularly after orchid plant division. I don't know whether it aids in this or not. Sorry.

Brenda, a number of years ago I spoke with some growers of orchids and other plants who swore by Superthrive for preventing transplant shock. It was also used for re-habbing that occasional plant that accidentally didn't get watered and dried up. The original owner, who was sort of an oddball, kept his formula close and did not encourage research, has passed away. I do not know if the present owners will be more open to studies. I do think the formula must have changed as it is a different color liquid now, a much lighter brown.

If one reads some of the advertising from way back when, you would think that Super Thrive could cure cancer. It sure solved every problem dealing with plants. Sticking tongue out Someone posted that the advertising has been scaled back in the last year.

Yes, they made outrageous claims of miracles on the old label, and that has changed. I think a few people began to question its effects, and some research showed that the formula didn't have anything in it that aided plants except a growth hormone that is now banned in at least 20 states. So even the old formula was not great despite its fabulous claims on the label, except possibly for transplanting and root stimulation.

Safe to say "save your money", Brenda. It was a fad at best, and has fallen out of favor. Plus it's ghastly expensive!

My Miltonia flavescens is blooming. It used to grow on a tree, but a storm broke the tree and we had to cut the branch. It is too heavy to hang it so it stands against the trunk of a cherry tree.
